do cai or ram air really improve performance rather than just better filter

I want to get good gains in performance and mpg by upgrading intake. Can I do this by just getting a AEM air filter, or should I spend the extra money on a weapon r?

You will not see any major improvements doing a CAI setup. I would suggest picking up a K&N panel filter as it is cleanable and performs better than a normal paper filter.

Ya, I've heard it is minimal.... Just want to maximize throttle response and mpgs,I drive for work. AEM makes a washable filter also which is probably what I'll go with if I keep the stock box..

There's a resonator behind the left headlight that I've removed in this pic:

In the bottom, there's a 1 1/2" test plug with a hose clamp sealing the hole.

There's another box coming off the intake hose that you seal with another test plug:

Better view of the tube:

2" is the normal recommendation, but the one I used split the tube. Wound up with a 1 1/2" threaded pvc plug in there.

The 3rd one is a large baffle under the left fender. Remove the screws holding the liner below, then reach up and yank it out. Will take some time, and probably some scrapes, but could just fall out. No plug needed for this one.

Arguably, K&N filters provide more power. This is due to their design where the filter is less restrictive; therefore allowing a greater flow rate air. Conversely, this also results in dirtier air.

I don't have a study to back up either of these statements.

until you open up the exhaust the actual gains are going to be pretty minimal. that being said I am still sold on the k&n filter, glad that I did it years ago

I have been running a generic open cone air filter and it runs fine, no surging or anything, I was going to put in a heat shield too but it didn't work out . Just running the air filter and it runs fine, I think there's more power now.

I assume you have the V6 right?

I've done a stock box mod. Dont really know the ropes here but for the first gen 3.3s non supercharged I've made the intake using the stock box removing 1 resonator and removing the bigger resonator in the fender.

Is there a part number for the k&n? Or are they all the same?
I bought a eBay brand "cold air" induction with a generic cone filter provided.. had a heat shield that came w it, but couldn't easily install that so I left that out . Was $50 bucks on eBay and it works good . Really should get a k&n cone so the dirt doesn't do damage but we'll see.

If you just want a panel drop in k&n , you should be able to search k&n panel on eBay and they'll come up.

Or just use the pipe. Cut some silicone couplers and then use the panel filter with the one resonator on the radiator.
