Thoughts on Knock Sensor relocation?

00 Xterra, 3.3l. I recently watched a video of another Xterra owner relocating the Knock Sensor from the top of block, under Intake Manifold. To, the top of Intake Manifold.

Pros and cons of doing this?

Thank you!!

Pros:
easier access if it breaks again
No longer in the hottest part of the engine
Gets rid of the code

Cons:
Further away from hearing the noises is designed for
Still have to dig through the lower intake to get to it
Code really doesn't affect the na engine

If you're set on doing it, fine, but I wouldn't unless I have to dig in there for something else.

as long as you are non super charged you can always do the resistor mod and delete the sensor completely. it is a harmless code that does not hit the CEL and without the super charger it really does nothing. If you do have the SC then it throws you in limp mode.

It was something that we used to do back in the day. like ten years ago. I have not heard any talk about them, knock sensors, that is for a long time.

We're in the middle of this with our '03 Nissan Xterra. It's not supercharged. We had a mechanic do the relocation but somehow he wired it wrong. Overnight the battery would drain and the Xterra wouldn't start in the morning. We called the mechanic back out and he "re-wired" it, but the same thing happened. It would drive just fine, but when left off for an extended period of time (overnight) it would drain the battery. To be certain the relocation was/is the problem we disconnected the knock sensor completely overnight. Granted it caused a code, but it turned on the next morning with no battery drain. This issue is still open for us, since that's not what we paid for.

I also did the relocation on my 04 S/C. I relocated it on the firewall. Top left of the photo. I also run premium to avoid the pinging. Lasted about a year so far but recently got the Cel back but also have the p0430 atm so i think its more related to that and not the K/S. I had huge power loss the first time it started acting up, that's why I relocated and replaced it. I ended up removing the S/C and lower intake to remove it and relocated it. I know some just fine the wire and cut it and relocate it. It wasn't too bad, about a 4 hour job IIRC. Great time to replace spark plugs and plug wires as well. I am always down to field any questions too if anyone is about to this repair or in the middle of it.

When the CEL came on and it gave the K/S error we decided to relocate it. After getting past the bad wiring job the mechanic did, the CEL light returned with the P0430 error. If the weather holds out, we will be replacing the rear left catalytic converter over the weekend. The huge power loss is one of the symptoms my Xterra did. It actually went into limp mode. I'm hoping replacing the C/C and adding the related O2 sensor will do the trick. I agree with you, I really don't think the K/S was the culprit.
