Very early take on my new setup

Good morning all. Yesterday I picked up my Xterra after having the double add a leaf and Bilstein 5100 shocks installed. Also a new set of Duratracs in 285/75/16. Altogether a 4.5" increase in ride height. The front mud flaps had to come off, which is a simple 3 screws per side. They go back in of course to support the inner fenders. Tonight i will do the melt mod, which should eliminate the rubbing overall. I wanted to do the work myself but am lacking the tools and the time. The AAL and struts were purchased from PRG. He was very helpful. Everything went together fine and I can easily tell the difference in stiffness in the rear. On my short 25km drive to work this morning at about 80km/hour you can certainly feel and hear the tires. They will I'm sure wear in a bit. Either way, I love the look and the extra ride height. Once I get it washed up I'll get some pics posted. Can't wait to get my rock sliders on as well, once they are coated. My next project is to build a hitch mounted, swivel spare tire carrier. Eventually I will have to buy another full size tire for a spare, and I love the look of it on the back. I still need access to my hatch, So fabbing a hitch mounted swing style carrier is going to be a winter project. Has anyone else on here ever built one or seen one? Pros/cons? Pics to follow shortly.

there was a company that made the hitch mounted carrier, I just can't remember what company it was.

the downside of the hitch mounted carriers Vs a rear bumper with swing arm is very similar, you will need to move the tire to access the cargo area. but with the hitch mounted one you loose access to your hitch, for either towing or recoveries.

This.

I would just plan on building or buying a complete rear bumper with tire carrier.

Can't wait to see the pictures.

Photobucket is pretty crap now since they removed the free hotlinking. Upload to imgur, or to here directly and post inline.

Okay, PLEASE, help me out here. I'm new to all this and want to learn so I can pimp my Xterra. I have a 2007/Gen 2.

1. With the double add a leaf being installed do you need to lift the front end?

2. 285/75/16 tires.... Are those the largest tire you can install on the stock rims?

3. What is a "melt mod?"

Please and Thanks

  1. A double AAL will bring your rear up about 2.5" iirc. A set of 2" top spacers or adjustable coilovers would be needed to bring the front up to the same height.
  2. You can do 305/70 on stock rims. Will require more than the melt mod though. Metal trimming.
  3. The melt mod is essentially heating up the fender liner and pushing it in so that 285s do not rub.
