I had a crazy idea but dont know if it is possible to do. I want to remove the stock shifter knob and replace it with the .44 magnum manual shifter knob.

that is the problem that I am trying to encounter right now is how to get the stock knob off. The only way I can think of if there is a metal rod in there that the old knob could just be cut off and removed. Has anyone done this before because the input would greatly appreciated.

I just went outside and took a quick look at mine and it looks like if I cut it with a razor blade 4 times it should hopefully just come off with some elbow grease. now on the other note is it just a straight rod that the stock knob sits on top or is there threads on top?

the only good thing about working in Houston, Texas is that the heat just loosens the stock knob up but not enough to pull it right off.

Just give it hell.. I have a Grenade as my shifter knob.. It is held on there with some form of Nissan Locktite, not impossible to get off, but it is a fine thread and there are quite a few, I don't recommend cutting it off, that will only make matters worse.

How far do the threads go down and what was your method of giving it hell??

I took a cloth wrapped that around it, then put a wrench to it.. as soon as you make that first break in the locktite, it is easy to spin off. If you want to put something else on it, use an M10 x 1.25 nut (Like my grenade)

And the threads go down about an inch?

The knob screws on, but there is thread lock on them. When they're installed, they're torqued down really tight too, so the lettering lines up straight. If you know you don't want the OEM knob, get some big ol' vise grips on that sucker and give it a twist. Cutting into the knob won't work because the knob isn't threaded, but the insert INSIDE the knob is. I forget if it's steel or hard plastic.

The threads on the shaft are M10 x 1.25 for anyone that's curious.

Yeah remove the boot, place one vice grip on the shifter shaft under the boot area. You won't see the scratch marks it will leave. Then take a shop towel and wrap around the stock knob. Put channel lock pliers around the knob covered in a shop towel. Hold the vice grip in one hand and turn the channel locks like hell. Will flex and be really hard to break the bond. But, it will seem like BAM! loose finger tight. Epoxy or something from the factory.

I will mess with it later tonight but this is what I have done so far. when I twisted it the outer shell tore off now there looks like a black shifter knob that just keeps spinning. is that where the threaded end is?

Is the shifter shaft spinning with the knob? Otherwise maybe you broke the insert in the knob. Might have to hack the knob up with a saw to get to the insert. Grip the insert with vise grip pliers and remove it.

now here is the question will one of those fancy shifters from the auto parts store fit it or is there going to be some modifications to make it fit?

I cut the rubber off of mine with my pocket knife then grabbed the insert with a pair of channel locks and it came off real easy. I put one of the silver chambered knobs on it from Autozone. just pick the tightest insert and screw it down as far as you can then lock down the set screws. That was the very first mod I did to my X. It was just like the knob that I installed in my pathfinder before the X.

(Guess I should look at dates before responding to post.)

Maybe if you pull on it while you twist it?

If you have a heat gun, give that a try. They'll get hotter than a hair dryer.

Oh I know I will like it ;) Just the POS factory knob is a mother to get off... and not how Muadeep thinks ;)
