lol it's all good, I like the AR15 for what it's meant to be, a rifle for disabling people. I don't think I'd ever hunt with one, and I certainly don't like them in a life or death situation. I'd much rather have the new 6.8mm or 7.62/.308.

here's a comparison image of my favorite calibers, from right to left ;)
408_compare.png

from left to right: .50BMG, .416 Cheytac, .338 Lapua Magnum, .300 Winchester Magnum, 7.62mm NATO, 5.56mmNATO

one thing I do like is that if you go AR15 and decide that 5.56/.223 is too puny for you, barrett makes a 6.8mm upper for it and most lowers are compatible from what I can find....

so....I'm breaking down....I've found out that I may still have an AR15 sitting in a gunsafe out of state so, when I go on vacation I'm going to pick it up....provided funds are available to go pick it up....that may cure my AR bug for now till I get me the time and money to build an AR10/LR308....pics as soon as it's back in hands ;)

Lots of companies make 6.8 SPC uppers. Barret isn't the only one.

I know Barrett does good work, but they're fairly new to the AR game and they are ridiculously overpriced. I've got my eye on a Stag Arms 6.8 upper.

ok, chasing a CHEAP ar15, so, the question is this. DPMS Sportical, or S&W M&P 15T assuming both are in stock and can be had by the deadline I've set...which would you rather have?

nevermind, neither was....DPMS Oracle (in black) was though...

Having had a S&W, I will say that they are on par or better than most AR manufacturers. Buy I'd still prefer a DPMS.

and...the wait was well worth it...here's my toy

P6100090.JPG

the rundown:
DPMS Oracle
NCStar Full Size Bipod w/AR mount adaptors
NCStar P4 Sniper 3-4x40 Illuminated Reticle Scope w/BDC for 100/200/300/400/500yds
UTG Sniper Pistol Grip
Magpul MOE Carbine Foregrip
Magpul CTR Commercial Stock
Magpul CTR Cheek Riser
TTI Eliminator Muzzle Break
Accuwedge Buffer

I think that's everything that's been added/modded thus far.

Took it out today and did some zeroing and am clustering 10 rounds in a 2"x2" square with a 1" bullseye in the center of that square, at 100m (not 100yds) with a 9->3 crosswind, 5-8mph constant, gusting to 15mph with a elevation drop from shooting position to target of approx 35'. I'm pretty happy with that, I'd like to have a bit more accuracy, but, all things considered, shooting at outdoor temps over 100F I'd say that's nothing at all to complain about. If I had to gauge it I'd say it's shooting 1.5MOA running TulAmmo 62gr steel casing (CHEAP russian stuff) I know when I put about 100 rounds of Federal 55gr through it I measured it out at .75 MOA and the scope was dead on with bullet drop whereas with the 62gr it's a little off, obviously.

it is indeed....in its future I see a better scope, and a trigger job. though, I may hold off on those for one I build from scratch for myself and let the wife have this one...put some of the stock stuff back on it and take my good parts off...if I'm feeling generous that is.

I know as soon as my FFL guy finds me a good deal on a larue tactical 20" 7.62mm OBR I'll be picking one of those up....I'll happily take a .5MOA guaranteed rifle that's winning international sniper competitions. guaranteed that it'll do everything and anything that I could want it to do ;)

gun porn indeed.....a new trigger job is in the immediate future, possibly an upgraded scope, but, I have a hunch the scope will be saving for a while, or, I'll need a killer commission month....I'd really like to have something that's better magnification than the scope I have....maybe a 4-16, or even better, I'll just have to see what I can find for what kind of price. any suggestions out there?

Alright guys. Im convinced to do an AR15 build. Planning on more of a rifle for messing around at the range, home defense/ zombie defense, and close range coyote hunting/deer hunting. It will be outfitted with a red dot and I'm leaning towards a 16" barrel. I know some of you will say a 5.56/.223 is not powerful enough for deer, but I've got tens of experience deer hunting (even with a .223). It will also be just for close quarters aka deer stands, canyons full of cedars hunting coyotes, etc. basically less than 100m because I've got a .270WSM that is rigged for deer/elk hunting and will easily take down a deer at 450+ yds (ask me how I know).

Now here is where I have to make a choice. I also have a ruger m77 in .204 caliber that I load my own rounds for and is my coyote/p-dog gun. It's got a 6.5-20 power cabelas alaskan guide scope (I am told it is made by Leopold but has cabelas name on it.) and is a tack driver. Not only is it amazingly accurate but the ballistics are amazing : + .3" @ 100m, 0 @ 200m, -2.5" @ 300m, -5.5" @ 400m. My question is- what would you do; would you keep the bolt action .204, or sell it and build a .204 upper with a 20" fluted barrel and just swap uppers with one lower depending on what I'm going to do?

Sorry, long winded scatterbrained post.

get this lower....my FFL got one in on a gun and said it's rock solid tight....I may have to get one too.... http://www.marksarmory.com/Spikes_Tactical_Zombie_Lower_Receiver_p/stzombie.htm

as far as your build, go to a 18" barrel, it's shorter than a regular M16 would be, but long enough to hopefully get that velocity and energy up for deer hunting (remember, most varmint and hunting rifles are 20+" barrels)

for your .204 idea, keep the bolt action, also build a .204 upper as funds allow, and if the .204 based AR is equally accurate, *THEN* sell the bolt action, or, keep it in case you miss shooting something bolt style (I know I certainly do)

That's a good idea. I do love that .204 bolt action, so I think I'll build the 5.56 and Then gather parts over the next year for a quality .204 build. From what I've read a 22" fluted barrel with 1:10 or 1:12 is great (for the .204, because it's got such a high velocity). I'll definitely look in to that lower as well.

Well I just purchased a DPMS lower with complete LPK including 6 position stock for $200 locally. Sure beats the prices I was finding online, and most places didn't even have it. I Lso won't hav to pay a transfer fee. Only thing that sucks is I don't turn 21 til oct 8th. The guynwasmcool though and let me go ahead and pay for it so it's assured I get it and I just have to stop by on the 8th. So stoked! Just narrowing it down between a couple barreled uppers and after that it's just sourcing a BCG and CH!

Somehow managed to find a PSA complete lower with a Magpul UBR and IWC QD sling mount for $375 shipped. Not bad if you ask me. The UBR is $225 on its own.

Pretty! How do you like the PRS? I'm contemplating getting one on my ar15 instead of the CTR...

For a bench shooter, I absolutely love it. Get all the adjustments dialed in an its ultra-sweet!

Just got some brass and a few bullets in so I can start reloading and shoot it a bit more. Had some old 40 yo surplus I burned thru but don't like shooting up the match grade stuff.

How about for a GP rifle? Something to hunt, bench, and MOUT drill with. A2 stock or PRS stock? (I don't want or like my collapsible stock)

I have an opinion, but it's only 50%...PRS HAS to be better than the A2. I hate that thing. Just doesn't feel right for me, even though I shoot my rifle with the stock all the way to the rear. I don't know why, but I just don't like it. I'd do the PRS in a heartbeat on a more precise rifle build.

See, I have 8 years behind an A2, it's what I'm used to, and feels fine to me...I like the PRS though...just never gotten hands on...

My only exposure to the A2 was OSUT, and that was 9 years ago. The year before I got out, my unit finally got M4s, and then of course I have my collapsible stock on mine. I dunno..it just was never that comfortable to be, but I didn't shoot it outside of quals.

See, I did plenty of trigger time with it. Urban Warfare center and all...

I prefer the UBR over the PRS. Adjustable stock that feels as rock solid as a fixed stock. IMO there isn't much better out there than a UBR, unless you are strictly bench shooting.

ETA: I currently have a B5 SOPMOD and the cheek weld is amazing and they are very reasonably price as well.

Hm, I'll look at the UBR, but, my primary motivation is to be able to tune my rifle to ME, so my wife can't screw with it and have it out of whack when I need to shoot....hence the want for a non-adjustable length stock.

Dont think I'd like a prs model on a carbine....

The magpul ACS I have on one of my ar's.
I really like it over the CTR, and it gives you battery storage for TAC lights or optics down each side.
It also locks down completely movement free.
http://store.magpul.com/product/MAG371/180

The ACS is on the green furnitured AR.

Then again, I have a CTR on my newest build, but just want lightweight/simplicity on that one for competition.
