Went all over the Florida panhandle today looking for a toolbox mount for my antenna. Got to a small town where this electronics shop I heard of was supposed to have it. Long story short, he didn't have the mount but I did walk out of the shop with a 9' whip antenna and a galaxy 225 amplifier.

I know nothing about these things. I've been looking online since I got them and I read that amplifiers are illegal but the shop owner (who may have just been trying to make a sale) told me the high end amps are illegal (2000+).

Any info on this? I know it'll boost my transmitting and some receiving as well, but is it illegal? What makes it illegal? Info please.

It's like speeding... it's only illegal if you're caught.

So many truckers have amps on their rigs that it's commonplace. I can sometimes here truckers that are over 10 miles away. They can't hear me, but I hear the chatter for sure. If the amp is small and you want to put it on a switch or a relay that goes into a bypass or something, do that. Then if you into a problem in the back country, you get a message out on channel 9. If anyone asks, tell them it must have been an atmospheric skip, your truck was nosed down in a ditch or the signal got bounced off Santa's sleigh or something.

I don't need an amp on mine. I had mine tuned by a shop and it pegs the swr meter, reaches out to a lot of people and can pick up signals on the highway I feel like miles away

Yeah. I keep going back and forth. I'll make my final decision Tuesday when my new cb comes in. Provided I find somewhere to put it relatively out of the way.
