Gas Filler Extension with 2" BL

Hi Guys, I am finally getting a body lift put on my '03 SE/SC. I stopped by the shop to check on it today, and they said they are waiting on a piece to make an extension for the gas filler. The one that came with my AC kit did not fit.

I have been nervous about putting the body lift on, because I don't want it all "hacked" up, My X is super clean and looks nice, I don't want to ruin it.... but I have bumpers coming for it and figured in the long run, I wouldn't be happy without a BL and bigger tires. So I had to make the decision.... My question is, is it normal that they have to do the extension for the gas filler?

I supplied them with the longer upper radiator hose, so i hope that part goes smoothly for them, and I forgot to ask them about trimming for the shifter to engage in 4Lo. So I guess I am just looking for positive feedback, saying I'm gonna Love it ;) Haha.... Can't wait to pick it up, and just got the email today that my White Knuckle Sliders are on their way!!!

Thanks guys, I have never read anywhere on hear that someone did not like their body lift,,, so I guess I'll be ok :)

That's interesting, I haven't heard of many people doing this when doing the body lift. Sounds like the shop wants a couple of extra hours tacked on.

Dawn your shop just sucks.. They seem to screw up everything they touch on your Xterra...

You do not need any extension for the 2"BL

I so wished we lived closer because we could save you time and money. We have done these BL in 1.5-3 hours tops..

I'm gonna have to move to TN to get anything done right huh? :)
I actually took it to another shop this time, but again.... it is a big reputable shop (Apple Hill 4X4) I even gave them the step by step instructions from this forum (with pictures).... But they promise me it will be ok.... at least until I see my bill. They have had it since last Monday and it's still not done (Ouch!!) I did question whether that filler ext really needed done, and he said it did. I'm just hoping the do the radiator correctly and I don't have any overheating problems like I've read about on some of them. That always scares me, when you overheat you can damage so many other things. They originally wanted to quote me 16 hours of labor.... I said... No Way...Everyone else can do it in their back yard in about 8 hrs. So we'll see....

We have not even needed the gas filler extension for the 3" BL, let alone the 2" BL.

There's enough slack.

Same for the t-case lever extension....its easy enough to dremel out a notch in the floor if the stick needs more room to get down into 4 low, etc.

So... I have come to the conclusion that my X is a slut. Most people look at my X and think my front end is too low (torsion bars not adjusted right perhaps?)... which is why I kept taking it back when my Suspension lift was put on... but after needing the gas filler extension,,, that could be because my ass is just too damn high... 1 inch higher than everyone elses. The kit came with a 2" extension, which they said they could not use, because it was too long, they said I was only about an inch off. Hence, the needed extension.... No big deal.

So today I go to pick it up and check it out, and they inform me that just an FYI... my rear bumper is illegal because I am over the 31" height limit. Again... no big deal. I like the look of it with her ass in the air! But it got me thinking that maybe it is just a tad bit higher than everyone elses??? But my new bumpers should be ready in a week or two so the weight of them may set it down a bit.

He said he did not have to notch out any metal for my shifter, and I took it for a test drive and made sure it engaged. I don't believe I have ever had it in 4Lo, so I couldn't say if it was any harder than normal, but it didin't make any noises, so I think it's ok. Paid out the ass for it to be done, the one drawback of having no friends, haha! He showed me the techs, worksheet and he actually had 24 hrs labor, but he charged me for 10 hrs. But, I couldn't do it myself, so as long as they back up their work and have done everything correctly, that's ok. We shall see...

Well.. We so need to get you hooked up with more locals..

Most 4x4 shops know nothing of Nissan.. So they will quote high. I had a shop near me that's on spike tv tell me that body lifts are dangerous on Xterras... They wouldn't sell us pucks...

They are mostly jeep guys that hate anything but jeep..

Good luck with this... I can't wait to see it!

Ps. Wentwindrock is doing a women's run hint hint

They were the only shop that would even agree to do it... I would say this shop does mostly bigger trucks, Dodge, Chevy, etc... I don't mind paying if the work is good. and so far I have been happy with my SL, so hopefully I am just as happy with the BL. If i didn't have a dog that was so hard to travel with, I would go to Windrock. I do want to start planning and saving now to go to MOAB, I really miss the scenery of that area. I think I will take it to ECXC at Rausch this month. I feel a bit intimidated by myself, I don't want to make any mistakes but everyone was very nice and made me feel welcome at the April Fools Run, so I just need to get more comfortable with it.

So, finally got my X back today. Been driving it around to make sure there are not unusual noises or overheating, (that was my main worry). All seems good, until I opened my hatch and saw that the extended radiator hose that I bought for them to use, and the extra washers, are all still there??? So I am now wondering, how he did my radiator. I specifically told them, not to relocate it and use the longer hose??? But my temp gauge is staying at the same place as normal. I have to take it back in a few hundred miles to let them recheck and tighten everything up again, so I will ask them about it.

The front end is supposed to be ~ 1.5" lower than the butt....and that's common for all trucks in the USA, not just X's or Nissan's etc. It improves MPG, ride and handling, braking, etc.

The suspension lifts/holds up the FRAME. There is ZERO relationship between the length of your gas filler hose and your suspension height.

The BL is ONLY changing the distance from the frame to the body, period. The gas tank and the frame are attached to each other....so if the frame moves, the tank is along for the ride.

The BODY is ALSO attached to the frame, so if the FRAME MOVES, the body is along for the ride.

The gas tank filler opening is on the BODY....and, if you adjust the suspension, the tank and filler move in unison (They are attached)....so there is no way to change the distance between them with your suspension.

:D

A 2" BL takes about 2-4 hours for average people with hand tools and some experience gets them closer to the 2 hour mark.

An 18 year old girl who had never held a wrench in her life did her OWN BL in about 8 hours, alone, except a few minutes where her mom held the other end of a few bolts she said.

If a newb girl who never wrenched in her life, with hand tools, can do a 2" BL in ~ 8 hours, alone, how in HELL did the tech's stretch that to 24 hours using air tools and a fully equipped shop, etc, and, hopefully, guys who HAVE held a wrench before?

When we do mod days in the drive way, we AVERAGE about 2-3 hours per BL, and that's WITH beer and pizza breaks, goofing off, etc.

Your shop seems a bit, um, opportunistic?

As for ECXC, that's a GREAT place to go to learn the ropes!

They have trails for all levels of ability and ride.

I recommend doing the stock trails as learning to off road is job one....your rig is typically more capable than the driver...so, you're the one who needs the "mods" now.

The Green/Stock trails CAN be done by a new driver with a bone stock X, but, they are NOT just dirt roads, they involve using technique, etc, and are a great learning experience. There are also sections of those trails where if you keep to one side, its easier, and the other side is harder, etc...so you can tailor the line you drive to your comfort levels as you go.

Yea, I know about the 1.5" rake, mine was about a 3" difference after my Suspension lift, but i did the AAL and revolvers. So I don't know what the deal was with the gas filler, but hopefully it doesn't cause any problems. I have a feeling the tech followed the instructions that came with the lift and relocated my radiator instead of following the directions I printed out for them, even after I stopped in 3 days in a row to make sure how things were going... I know tech's hate that. I worked in car dealerships most of my life, so I do it with the utmost respect. and I don't waste their time. Everytime they said, yep, yep, we know....dont' worry....

As far as the trails, I did go to Rausch Creek and ran the green trails back in April. the X handled well. That was my first time, and some spots were a bit tricky, I bypassed a couple just because I wasn't sure of my ability and I didn't want to get stuck and hold up the line plus, I didn't have a co-pilot to give me any courage, haha!!

Live & Learn I guess :)

It's just costing me a lot to learn with these shops around here. It would be cheaper in the long run if I build a garage at my house.

LOL

Yeah, it IS like that.

:D

A driveway is OK for rig work though, as by the time we lift them, etc, they don't fit into a garage anymore anyway.

:D

I'm surprised you were 3" TALLER in back with AAL/Revolvers though....as if the front was lifted 3" and the rear is lifted 3" that's going to leave a 1.5" taller butt, but, your butt is lifted a TOTAL of 4.5" according you it being 3" TALLER than the front.

The Revolvers give ~ 2/3 - 3/4" lift (AC uses different versions, just like their lift shackles vary, etc) ...so that means your AAL lifted your butt ~ 3.75" all by themselves.

OR

It means they did not adjust the t-bars in front up enough after adding UCA, so that the front is lower instead of the rear being higher, to get that much difference.

If the AAL gave ~ 4" of lift that's a lot...but, AAL and your stock pack/truck's weight do have enough variables to get a wide range of final lift heights...so, it is possible.

Just in case, there's a PLACE the front and rear are measured for rake...its at the front and rear of the sliders, to the ground, at all 4 corners (Not at the wheel arches, etc).

Do you have slider to ground measurements for the 4 corners?

I'll be at ECXC as always, so, Plan B, or G, or whatever you're up to lately - I'll take a look at it for you next week.

:D

Great, I hope I get a chance to meet you there. I did measure at all the correct places when I had first gotten it back and I remeasured several times on different surfaces and it was always about a 3" diff. But again, I'm not really complaining about that. I like the look of it. I just want to make sure everything is correct and functioning properly.

I will most likely go to ECXC on Saturday, I was not registered, it's just tough for me to get away for a whole day. But Mike from NEXterra said he would sign me up, I just got to pick my day and send my money in. So I will do the Green trails on Saturday. I know my rig is capable of doing harder trails, but I am not, haha... plus I can't break anything, or else, I'll need to rent a car to get home, haha.
