Gen I t-case vs. Gen II t-case

Ok, someone school me here that knows the answer-
Is the Gen I t-case interchangeable with the Gen II? I am wondering if I can remove mine and put a Gen I in there?

If not, is anyone aware of adapters for the Gen II t-case that would fit a toyota t-case?
Has anyone taken apart their Gen II t-case? I'm interested in seeing what the inside looks like (w/o having to remove mine to do so).

No the cases are different between gens.

No there are not any adaptors to run Toyota cases.

You have two options: 1. Atlas transfer case with the available adaptor plates. 2. Perhaps a divorced transfer case to mount behind your current case.

Ive already researched the Atlas and found the adapter for it. My problem is how much it costs (WOW!).

I found a 1988 Taco t-case that an off road friend will let me buy (he owns a Taco and showed me his doubled up t-cases which he then re-geared). I'm trying to figure out how to make it work.

My problem is the lack of options to re-gear our Gen II t-case. Drives me nuts. The only option I can think of is to mate my t-case with another one to improve my gearing.

I looked through this thread on TNX and it made it sound like there are t-case gears for Gen I's: http://www.thenewx.org/forum/showthread.php?t=20942&highlight=transfer+case

Yeah you would be left to come up with the splined adaptors and case adaptors. Tough stuff. Its easy to double toyota cases on a toyota because the cases pretty much bolt together with a adaptor plate. Definitly not the case with a Nissan. It can be done but not cost effectively.

As I said before a divorced transfer case (means short driveshaft to a external transfer case like a np205) might be the next easiest thing. Though the gen 2's have a short rear drive shaft so not real sure it would work.

There is lower t case gears for gen 1's I have them and they are amazing.

^I'm so jealous.

I'll talk to my friend about and see about the feasibility of a divorced t-case.

Sometimes, I really dislike Nissan for making newer model vehicles harder to mod. Poop.

My friends are talking about simply 3-linking my X. But I do not have the funds for that kind of project. Alas.

They also want to move my Fiat body onto a '73 Chevy Chassis and put 37s under it. I'm actually tempted by that idea.

I was initially going to go with the Rockwell axles, but I decided they were too heavy since I wanted to go more rock "bouncer" than rock "crawler." So I bought these.

Once I clean up all of the REDNECK fabwork off of them, than I can start MY project

^Congrats! Looks like fun. :)

I actually am not interested in SAS'ing my X. I'm happy with the suspension set up that I have. It just seems that all my options to re-gear are getting into the more than I can afford zone. And I am not one to simply trade in my X for a different model/upgrade or vehicle itself. I consider my X to be a journey and it's gonna be (and so far has been) great fun. Although my credit card statements tell me otherwise, haha!

I've been putting a lot of thought into making tcase gears recently... a lot of thought.

Problem is that I can't run them in small batches and can't afford to have hundreds and hundreds sit on the shelf for the next 10+ years.

However, we could do research to see what the world wide demand is like for them and if this same tcase crosses over to other vehicles like the patrol. If they do cross over into the patrol then I would definitely move forward with this project and do what I can to make them available world wide.

However I would still need over 50 of them spoken for before we went into production. I'd be aiming for tcase gears to me made in a ratio close to 4:1

Let me know what you guys think.

I'm also a member of Expedition Portal. I will ask over there, where there are plenty of Patrol owners, and see what their t-case looks like and if it is interchangeable.

For me, it is simply easier (or maybe ideal) to swap out the t-case gears since I am the "S" model and if I wanted to re-gear my diffs, I basically would need to swap out my axles. Granted, I am aware there is a short buy on r180 gears and I think c200 right now. But I'd rather leave the option open to do other things with my axles and just work with the t-case.

Thanks, Steeevo.

Awesome. We will need to know the year of patrol too.
Short buy on r180 gears? Where is this happening?

I tried to research this last night but came up empty.

The Xterra, Frontier and Titan use the TX-15 transfer case.

Obviously gen 1's use the TX-10.

I couldn't locate what the model number of a Nissan Patrol case is. Though it seems to point towards TX-10A. Though there are several gens of patrol. Many different gear options already available for their case. I belive 3 different ratio options. Daves 4x4 is the website that stocks them. Now this is going back several years. But, I vaguely remember (
Hope I'm not dreaming) reading that AC contacted Daves 4x4 to make the TX-10 gears which AC now sells. The parts from a patrol case were slightly different from a TX-10 case.

I sort of feel if Tx-15 gears were available. They would of been marketed to the Xterra, frontier, titan models already. But who knows.

The older patrols have the tx-12 but im not sure about the new one.

Thanks for the leads guys!

As far as c200 gears.. what ratios are you looking for? And you're referring to the c200k right? (05+)

Its just easier starting from having no t-case like me and dropping in a divorced np 205. They are hard to find but it will be well worth it. Im just starting to mock up stages to figure out how to mount and run all the drive shafts

Stevo- I'd be interested in a set of 4:1 transfer gears, and a set of 4.88's for my 180/200 axles....

Sent from my iPhone4 using Tapatalk

What year is your truck? 05+? If so you don't want 4.88s. 2nd Gen nissan trucks are geared much different than other domestic or gen 1 trucks. 4.56 gears is good for 35/37" tires.

I posted on ExPo here: http://www.expeditionportal.com/forum/threads/116353-Xterra-Frontier-transfer-case-vs-Patrol-transfer-case

Since my stock gears are 3.13 = very sucky for descents. Ideally, I'd like 4.10s or so. I could care less about highway speeds. I have a daily driver, my X is simply my play toy now. I do not want to make my X a rock crawler. I want to make it a very capable expedition-type overland traveler. And yes, c200k.
Excellent!

I believe we can take the c200k 4.08 gear and install it in an x with a small ring gear spacer similar to the m226 setup.
There is no need for a custom / new gear to be made.

I can't find a Dave's 4x4 that knows anything about Nissan's.. do you have any contact info?

Or are you talking about marks in Australia?

I'm still interested in researching the t-case idea some more. I am hesitant to re-gear my axles in the event that I will eventually change them out in the future (and unfortunately, too many of my mods already go on the credit card, haha).

I will definitely keep the r180/c200k gears in mind though. I love that you make things to make our trucks more fun to play with/drive.
