You can do it w/o the classes. Just get the book, take the free online practice exams. Study 20 min a day and you will be on the air in no time.

Tips on getting a book:

1. You want a book for the Technician exam. There are other exams (i.e. General, Extra), Technician is the first license you get when starting in amateur radio.

2. Be sure to get a book written for the 2014-2018 exam. There may be books out there for sale written for the 2010-2014 exam which is no longer in use.
