In Vehicle Safe

ok, I know it's been discussed before, but, now, I have to chime in. I've got my CHL packet in and being processed, and should have my concealed carry license soon, so now it's time for the safe to get installed in my X.

This raises a trio of issues to consider.

1. placement
it has to be somewhere that is inconspicuous enough that I can disarm safely without drawing attention to the fact that I'm pulling a gun and putting it in a safe, as well as being somewhere that isn't easy to spot from outside of the vehicle.

2. security
in the event of a break-in, I want the gun to be very difficult to steal, at minimum

3. safety
IF the firearm happened to be in the safe, and there were a wreck, I don't want it to be damaged, especially considering there's often youngster sitting in the back seat (strapped in via car seat)

My initial thought was to put a slide-forward safe under the passenger seat, then I can disarm from the driver's seat, without ever exiting the vehicle, however, that's a no-go, as there are already things (placed by nissan) under both front seats, and, that fails #3 as well, because if the vehicle were hit hard enough from the passenger side, the safe would be unobtainable, and thus a failed idea.

Second thought was under back seat behind driver's seat, but, then unless I disarmed and tossed it onto the seat, got out, walked around and placed it in the safe, then repeated process getting out, it doesn't work so well...

c'mon ya'll I need ideas here...

btw, we're storing my full frame 1911 and multiple spare mags.

...I thought of that, but, I don't know that my pistol would fit in the center console without a safe around it, let alone with one on it....I don't want to start chopping it up in case I ever have to trade the vehicle in, I don't want to leave a safe in there, y'know?

just something small enough to hold the gun and spare mags.

though, in thinking about it, I probably should go big enough to put the wife's pistol in too, unless I put a second one in....

I'm almost thinking it's time for me to hurry up and make my drawer set for the back...

Someone in TNX replaced the center console for a safe box so that is an option (I just can't remember who), but some fab is required, or maybe a small safe box inside the center console that is held/weld to the main brackets that hold the center console (not to the plastic center console)

That would only become an option if I could find a replacement console unit for cheap.

The one I remember on TNX was a guy that'd taken one of the microvault's or similar sized, cut a groove so it slid into the console all stealthy, and ran the anti-theft cable around the mount bracketing under the box...

have you seen the underseat safe drawers? they looked very nice little costly but plenty of room.

Depending on state laws you have to be careful about this. I believe in SC you cannot store a handgun under the seat unless its a factory storage compartment. Not sure if that affects safes.

I'm 95% sure they won't fit in a 2nd gen offroad that has the RF factory system

the amp and such are under the passenger seat, and the sub is under the driver seat....thus is the issue, I'd have made my own drawer style safe if I had the room.... actually, this MAY work, I might be able to get a couple angle iron pieces, run them across the bottom of the seat front to back, giving me vertical space inside the seat verticals, and if there's room for a small microsafe, I can rail mount it there so that it slides forward, and that'd work perfectly....

/me needs to get out a measuring tape...

I'd look into replacement center consoles. Something lockable. You would have to go custom with it maybe try a tuffy center console designed for a jeep. There are several other custom center console manufacturers as well. Sounds like the best option to meet your needs requirements.

I was wondering this too. I may look a little strange, but I bet you could mod a Tuffy Box to fit in place of it.

Simple solution here...Keep it on you 99.99% of the time. No post offices/courts etc. of course but I either boycott certain stores or totally disregard the "Free Kill Zone" signs. Just my 0.02 though

....ok, so, not sure if you're familiar with Texas CHL laws...here's a quick run down. No schools (my wife is a teacher), no places where school events are being held (wife is a teacher), no hospitals, no places where over 51% of their revenue comes from the sale of alcoholic beverages for on site consumption, and no anywhere else that has a Texas penal code 30.06 sign posted (that's the short list that applies to me), in addition, all employers have the right to refuse their employees the right to carry concealed (my current and previous employers both have, as do many others for liability reasons). So, while I'll obviously have it on me when I can, anyplace that I can't, I need a secure storage location.

It's also quite amusing, in Texas, unless the 30.06 sign is posted, whether or not you want me to carry, as long as it's not legally prohibited, I'm welcome to carry, because you failed to properly notify me, in exact legal terminology.

So, you're both right, and very wrong, because you failed to account for my employment, my wife's employment, and, the "oh sh¡t" trips to the hospital.

Swipe the message to the right on the forum runner app. But ditto what he said if it pertains to his thread. That's what the threads are for.
