Latest Victim

I recently checked the tranny level and found it to be a little low. Checked the radiator and found this:

Guess I am the latest victim. Looked in my reservior and it look like someone dumped Pepto Bismol in it. I got the warranty letter so I see how much the dealership is going to fight me.

Everyone.do.the.bypass!

I was actually reading up on it this weekend. I got the X last year. Bought it new but the wife was driving it. Always kept my eye on it. This past weekend I decided I should do the bypass. I was all set to go to Auto Zone tomorrow to get the new cooler. For some odd reason I decided to look at the tranny fluid which was fine. Opened the radiator and saw that. Look in the reservior and it looked like Pepto Bismal.

What year model and how many miles does it have on it?

2006 S(?) Just under 69,000.

Strawberry Milkshake of Death. It's an early Gen 2 (to 2008?) thing where the transmission cooler in the radiator breaks down and causes the two fluids to contaminate each other. symptoms are shuddering and jarring shifts. Nissan as acknowledged the problem, but refuses to issue a recall; they only cover partial reimbursement up to around 100K miles. Once it happens, you damn near HAVE to replace the tranny. This (I think) was the reason for the change from Matic J to Matic S.

SMOD! No! I just had it, too. I had bypassed and just had SMOD in the rad, too. Regardless, I qualified for full tranny, radiator, thermostat, etc replacement under the class action lawsuit - extended warranty. I had to pay a deductible because I have 99k miles. At 69,000 miles you should be 100% covered. Accept nothing less than full replacement of tranny, rad and everything in between. Nissan Corp pays for it so the dealer should not give you any problems.

Just a side note...I suffered the SMOD out of warranty range (110,xxx miles) and saved my transmission with an new cooling system install, Matic S fluid replacement, and a drain and fill of the AT.

It's been over 80K miles since and no problems, so it can be done.

Just changed my engine oil last week, and while the skids were off, I unplugged the oil cooler hose off of one side of the radiator just to check (bypass done for a while now) and only trans fluid came out.
Rad is still good (for now). 06 with 60k

Still need to change the radiator out though.

I caught mine Early.. Felt like Rumble strips on the road. That was indicator of SMOD.. Looked at the Radiator cap, had slightly foamy goo on it. really small less then 1/16" in size. Was enough to Alert me to a pending issue. Drove straight to dealer.. Told them I have Radiator Trans Failer due to Poor design. Mechanic, did not even test drive it confirmed what I told them. PARKED in shop.
2 week's to get new Radiator in. Flushed the system.. New Radiator.. New Matic S fluids ( updated Chemistry). Runs like a champ.

out of pocket was 50% of rental of Puddle skimmer car. Everything else was covered Except the Oil change ;-)

74,000 miles.. 07 SE.. case yea wondering.

Just dropped it off at the dealership. Service dude was real cool and told him the issues. He checked it out and called some higher ups to let them know. As of now everything us covered but will find out tomorrow after the techs look at it. I'm still under the 70,000 / 8 year clause. I tried to get a pic of the reservior but can't. Just not coming out for some reason.

Just got a call from the dealership. New tranny and radiator on order as well as a rental car for the length of the repair. Going to roll the dice and see if I can get my front and rear diff fluids changed thrown in on the deal.

No out of pocket costs to you, correct? It is a bummer but on the bright side you will have a new tranny, rad and thermostat. You can stop worrying about SMOD, too.

Nothing out of pocket. I'm under 70,000 and the 8 year clause. Crappy part is this was the weekend I had planned for bed lining stuff.

Got the X back today. New tranny and radiator with a 12 month 12000 miles warranty. Only bad thing is they gave me a Sentra for a loaner. Drove it one day and parked it.

The Sentra was nice. Interior was nice and roomy. Exterior is nice also. The engine and tranny are horrible. The engine was so loud I had the radio turned way up. The tranny seemed lazy. Weird way to explain it but it felt like if didn't want to work. It had an eco setting so you could get the max mileage out of the gas. Never came close to getting max.
