so, I stumbled into something that I didn't realize at the time what I was getting....but....

just picked up a couple of 420rd cans of XM855 5.56mm ammo (pre-packaged on 10rd stripper clips, with one adapter) at academy this morning...
(and a couple 100rd boxes of american eagle .223)
what I didn't realize before they went on the debit card was that XM855=SS109 (with a bit higher velocity)

for anyone who is unsure of what I'm getting at...SS109 = steel core penetrator, not "Armor Piercing", but, pretty dang close, and specifically named as an exempt munition from "armor piercing" restricting legislation.

anyone else looking for SHTF ammo, go find federal XM855 ammo, it's full on milspec ammo, and is a grade A ammo in my book. I would consider using it for hunting, but, all in all, it's gonna stay in the can and hopefully get a few more neighbors added to the pile ;)

do NOT expect to be welcomed back to a range if you're caught using this at the range btw, it's pretty taboo as it tears the hell out of their steel plate targets, and, if it's too dry, you run the risk of throwing sparks and starting fires....

Good find. All my local places are limiting .223 9mm .40 .45 and .308 to 1 box per day, 3 boxes total combined from those calibers. So even on the off chance I walk into Academy and they have a huge supply of cheap .223 I can only get 1 box.

Same here...but one box of 5.56 and one 223 ;) as long as you're chambered for 5.56 ;)
