New to xterra

Tomorrow I will be going to pick up a 02 xterra to replace my sad 4runner that was smashed by a falling tree. I plan to build a overland expodition vehical out of it like my 4runner. First things will be simple like geting the ac back and a tune up as well as swapping to manual locking hubs. Then will come the radio and lights and then a winch plate, swingout tire carier and onboard air compressor. The last nissan I owned was a datsun d21 truck so I'm a bit out of date on my tech for nissan engines. My end goal will be a manual trans swap with a diesle engine for best fuel economy and power.

Looking at the cab I think I might need to ditch the cobra 29 and switch to a smaller unit as the 29 is a huge beast that takes up to much room in the tight confines of a modern suv. I'll be reusing my curent whip and a mount on the front fender with a big spring.

Welcome to the nation, depending on the year D21 you had they are very similar to the truck that you have now. Ask me how I know..

Well I am waiting for a new title because the owner singed his name on the wrong line. The d21 was a early 80s model with a straight 4 and a 5 Speed

Edit it was a 720 not d21

I'm going to run 31s since I won't be doing much rock crawling just light offroading to get in to the best camping spots and to get my kayaks to good launch points

So my backspaced rims from my 4runner claimed their first victim on the Xterra today. I mounted them and went for a drive and ripped the front bumper off the driver side making a right out of my perents driveway (totaled 4runner is there right now) guess the 31s arn't happening right now

Yeah. When you reduce the backspacing, trimming is a must.
These are 15/8 rims and they are so offset that the brake sticks out the back side which was great on the 4runner which had tones of room in the front wheel wells but not so good on the Xterra with all the plastic. They are less than half a inch from metal at the rear of the wheel well at full lock

They were in the works for my 4runner and might still be if I end up bobbing it in to a rock crawler if I don't end up scrapping it.

Any body have a recommend body lift? I'm also thinking about the rear bumper and swapping it for a swing out and a high clearance front bumper. There is also this presure switch under the hood that I can't figure out.

You can build a body lift kit for about 60 bucks. There's a thread here all about it. All of the aftermarket bumpers are made to accommodate a 2" body lift.

The switch under the hood is part of the alarm. It's just like the door sensors.

Thanks for the link. I was hoping that the switch was something I could piggyback off of for lights under the hood

These are the rims I wanted to use but like I said they have to much back spacing

They do look better when not covered in mud and brake dust I like the silver on black paint, I have also deside that all the gray trim on the bumpers and mud gaurd is going to be painted gloss black and when I have time and money I will weld a new bumper up

While you have the welder out, make some sliders to replace the step rails. Nothing says wheeler like tin foil where you need it the most.

That was defiantly on the list so that I can use my highlift which will be mounted on the tire carier along with a gas can

Today I picked up 4 2 foot length of 1 inch webbing

Then I folded them all in half and used a sodering iorn to melt holes in them

With a washer on top I will be puting 2 of these under the hood using a curent but in the fender on each side and then 2 on the lift get strut bracket in the rear

With this setup I will be able to tie down my kayaks when I get the metal to build the new roof rack cross bars.
