This evening the New York senate by a vote of 43-18 passed gun control legislation that basically does the following.

Ban on all magazines over 7 rounds, no more new "assault weapons", all present assault weapons have to be registered and can only be at your home or a "registered range" (no such thing), all ammo has to be bought in person with a background check, all pistol permits have to be renewed.

A brief news story here. http://online.wsj.com/article/APac54f3a0b0244dc4b9de764b46ae5f73.html

Unfortunately this is what the nation may soon be looking at. Join the NRA or the SAF, to do your part to try and prevent this nation wide. If you're not a contributing member to one if not both of these groups you're part of the problem.

Everyone that hasn't, needs to take action. Here is a link to Ruger's site, they have made it super easy to contact your reps. I still think personal letters should be written but this is better than nothing..

Hadn't seen that one, and I agree hand written is better or calling. NRA has a similar one here and if you've never written your reps the NRA has a great guide page here.

some of the things in the 'control measures'

*semi-auto verions of full auto weapons including rifles, shotguns, and handguns (in other words, every semi auto weapon ever)
* ban on pre 1994 mags with cap of 11 or more
* ban on mags over 7 rounds
* background checks on all ammo purchases
* mental health reporting which is to be checked against the (new??) gun registry database
* 1 feature test for AW. Bushmaster AR banned by name
* 10 round mags to be grandfathered in but may only be loaded with 7 rounds (read elsewhere this will be a misdemeanor)
* all sales of ammo from registered ammo dealers to be reported to local police
* background check on all ammo purcahses
* ban of direct internet ammo purchases
* ammo purchases to go through FFL
* five year renewable registration for AW and handguns

Holy Sh:t!!

I have to have a background check just to get shotgun shells? F-that I'm calling my rep and stoping RI!

Does the 7 round clip also pertain to hand guns?

Haha, no kidding. I'm glad I don't live in NY.

Me too. Better hope this doesn't spread out to the other states....

FFL transfer for ammo purchases? you have to be kidding me....so if I buy a box of ammo for $20, and I have to do an FFL, that's easily $20 extra so 40 bucks for a box of ammo out the door.

But the growth of this bill is what we all need to do something about contact you senator or house rep. They could try and make it national. This bill is nuts a background check or ammo? Im fine with back ground checks for fire arms, at ffl's or gun shows. thats totally ok. but for ammo? Really talk about penalizing the innocent. Unless these bkg checks are free they are screwing every sportsman out there.

And how many semi autos have a clip smaller than 7 really? Not many that I know of, the whole assault weapon thing is absurd most people don't even know the difference between the ar15 and a true assault weapon. The semi autos aren't the problem. They are out there for our convince and safety.

If people want to kill there's plenty of other methods readily available that don't need back ground checks. Limiting what we can have is not the solution. generally its not the law abiding citizens that are evil people.

I will say this I too thought it was safe here in Nevada the Wild West! We have tons of farmers and ranchers and it really is a cowboy state, I emailed my senator and he replies back some bs never actually rebutting my email, but that we need to protect out children from gun violence. That was about it. Now I agree with that but limitations are not the solution. I want to know how many gun violence crimes are committed at places with security metal detectors, and armed guards. I really think that's a safer solution.

I work the 19th, but am planning on participating on Feb 8th.

I'd like to go back home to Nashvile for this. Montgomery isn't all that close, yet closer than Nashville. Montgomery just doesn't have anything else for me on either day. Wish it was Super Bowl weekend instead.

If you hate the NRA join the SAF. Like them or not these are the only two lobbying groups who have accomplished anything in the fight to protect and preserve the 2nd amendment.

I don't hate ether group I disagree with lobbing groups especially AARP and MOAA. Dumping large sums of money to change a politicians mind seems off to me. But I digress this bill is insane there is no way you should have to do a background check for all ammo purchases.

They should have set a cap on it like 500 rounds or more bought at one time.

You sir, should take a look at the American Anti Corruption Act. They are actually having nation wide gatherings to try and get money out of politics, it's gaining momentum. If nothing else just sign the petition. http://anticorruptionact.org/

Back on topic, I think these laws are ridiculous. This is not a response to incidents like the Sandy Hook (RIP) incident or any other of the recent shootings. This is an attack on the 2nd amendment. Think about it, if these laws were passed before any of the recent shootings, the shootings would still have taken place. The Sandy Hook shooter showed signs of mental instability, but he stole the guns he used. Other shooters bought their own guns but showed no signs of being unstable. Can anyone tell me how these laws DIRECTLY protect people from shootings?

I bet a lot of the good people on XN didn't know that a few days after the Sandy Hook shooting that there was a shooting in San Antonio. A man walked into a coffee shop to shoot his ex-wife, after shooting her everyone ran out of the coffee shop and hid in the theater next door. The man followed them but before he could open fire an off-duty police woman shot him. Why was this not covered by the media? It is a perfect example, the only way to stop a bad guy with a gun, is a good guy with a gun. Here is the conservative Snopes article that verifies the story: http://www.snopes.com/politics/guns/sanantonio.asp

All this is is an attack on the 2nd amendment and should be an outrage to every American citizen. Banning guns to keep people safe is going to do about as good as prohibition kept people from drinking, IT DIDN'T! It will just be pushed underground and that is when the bodies will really start piling up. It's going to be just like the War on Drugs, a HUGE drain on the American economy. Something we really don't need right now.

I read about the San Antonio shooting on Yahoo actually. It never made it on things like CNN though. There was also a school shooting involving a shotgun but there are no measures proposed to ban them. It's all been predetermined and politicians just waited til the right moment. Oh, and the speech today will involve children flanking the speaker......propaganda much.

Of course! They will use anything and everything they can to pass their views on the American populace, no matter how much opposition. Those in power over the last 3 terms have trampled the Constitution. Executive orders are being abused to give the administration more power and, ironically, bypasses congress to do it. There is no more checks-and-balances, the President does what he wants. He just recently signed a bill that overturned an 1997 bill that stipulated Secret Service protection for former presidents for 10 years after their terms. Now it is lifetime Secret Service protection for every President, spouse and their children, until age 16. I wonder why Obama feels he needs lifetime Secret Service protection?

* background checks on all ammo purchases --> So who is the one to do all these background checks? Economy certainly cannot support more work or jobs for those already over worked
* mental health reporting which is to be checked against the (new??) gun registry database--> This is basically the only one I am perfectly fine with and totally agree with
* 1 feature test for AW. Bushmaster AR banned by name --> Ouch, really? We use Bushmasters here at work!
* 10 round mags to be grandfathered in but may only be loaded with 7 rounds (read elsewhere this will be a misdemeanor)
* all sales of ammo from registered ammo dealers to be reported to local police --> Like we dont have enough to do as is being underpaid and short-staffed all the time, riiiiight...
* ban of direct internet ammo purchases
* ammo purchases to go through FFL --> *sigh*
* five year renewable registration for AW and handguns

And that is why Western states will NEVER subscribe to stuff like this. Wyoming Congress passed a law banning Federal agents from enforcing laws against the 2nd Amendment. In Idaho, if you take our guns, we will shoot to the death and rebel.

Saw that on Drudge.

I'm quite unhappy with the political "leaders" in office as of last year. Excuses for bills is all I've heard for the past year and this one is one of the more ridiculous pieces of legislation, among others.

I was thinking of this quite seriously earlier today before I saw this post. I can't help but imagine the scenario in my mind of what would happen if the government attempted to remove my guns from my possession. Would they send local law enforcement or military? What would be my reaction? I would never give up my guns that is for certain, however I am not certain I could take the life of someone just following orders, it is something for everyone to think about. I am going to put together a system and a "bug out bag" so hopefully I will know when they are coming I will just be gone when they get there along with my guns. idk just contemplating where all this is headed, think about it!

If it begins to happen most people will have time to hide their unregistered guns. You can always say you sold your registered guns, but I assume they will expect you to have done that in a way they can track it.

The way I look at it, especially if you live in a "red state", I doubt they're going to issue millions, upon millions of search warrants. Even if they do, I doubt they're going to flip your house like you're a suspected drug dealer... unless you are.
