Should I have an indicator light for 4wd H/L?

Is there some visual indicator I'm supposed to get when I put my car in 4wd High or Low? Because I'm not seeing anything. So far I've only driven in 4H and it feels like it's working on the snowy, iced over roads here in Utah. But I want to make sure I'm not missing anything?

Unless I'm mistaken, not in a first gen. It's a manual selector, so if the knob is in 4-Hi, then you're in 4-hi. The only possible issues is if you're still running auto hubs, that they might not engage.

in my 2004 xterra, I get a green indicator on the dash that looks like 4 tires and a drive shaft to, showing that I am in 4WD. It does not make a distinction between 4Hi or 4Lo, though.

Your bulb may have blown out on your dash if 4Wd is working but you get no light.

This. It's in the tach circle in the lower right quadrant.

The bulb is an LED so if it's not working I'd suspect wiring before the light itself.

True...most of the time it would likely be the switch that sends the signal or a bad connection at the device (plastic plugs falling out etc).

I just got lucky with my X and have a burned out cruise control indicator and ABS light on my dash. I am OK without the ABS light anyway since my ABS doesn't work and a new sensor is pricey...

The indicator switch is located on the passenger side of the transfer case, I would put money on the wire coming out of the switch is broken, and not the actual switch.. Either way it really does not matter one way or the other, it only is an indicator light nothing more. Mine has been gone for years with no ill effects. Plus if you can't tell if you are in 4 low just by the position of the lever you have other issues.
