Sounds like tin rattling?

So not too long ago I noticed when I'm driving at a slower speed that I get a sound like something tin is rattling or more like tin rubbing together slightly, and if go at a crawl, it gets a little louder (not SUPER loud or even loud that people will look at me, but just more noticeable) and I'm not sure what it is. I can't find out what it is because it doesn't do it when I'm stopped and there's really no way for me to hear it unless I'm driving (I guess I can go at a crawl and lean my head out and try to put my head under my truck, but I'm sure L.E. won't appreciate it). I've heard this on other cars before and I'm wondering what it is.

My Xterra is an '01 and I know certain things are falling apart and I fix them and whatnot but I'm not sure if this is something serious (I doubt it) or if it's not a big deal now but in the future it can be. I'm hoping you guys know what I'm talking about. I hope whatever it is, isn't super expensive because I just had some stuff done to my vehicle i.e. timing belt less than a year ago, just had my cracked exhaust manifold replaced, and this other item that was damaged when my broken skid plate flew off is going to cost me about $750 for the part (was told it's fine until the engine light comes on)

Nooopppeeeeeeee just crawl under the truck and look at the exhaust. You should see a metal ring sitting loose on the exhaust. Grab a pair of tin snips and cut that bi**h off :bmmd:

Don't go to the dealer just yet you'll find the loose metal if you go under your truck and have someone rev it to like 1500 rpm with the P brake on and locate the rattle

This.

This is a very common Gen 1 problem. I believe this is usually the first mod any of us make because it's the most annoying.

Check heat shields as well. What state you in brotha? The dealers will rape you.

I live in Flagstaff Arizona right now and I always go to Planet Nissan for EVERYTHING. If I get multiple things done to my car, they usually give me a discount or just don't charge me for one! They're an awesome dealership! They are a little pricey on things, but I completely trust them, and with some mechanics not being trustworthy, it's hard to find one you really like.

I'll try that out thank you! I'll see if my co worker will help me out this morning and rev it.

Awesome advice thank you! I'm going to see if I can find a loose ring :)

But another question, if it IS the heat shields that's causing the problem, what does that do? Does it cut your MPG or does it fill your car with fumes?

Well we revved my X and we didn't hear any scraping, and I can't remember if I even heard it this morning so maybe sometime yesterday that biznatch fell off. Idk. And I've googled exhaust heat shield and just heat shield in general and it's just a wrap that goes around the exhaust or something? I don't think I saw anything like that under my Xterra.

LOL @ that picture, and awesome video! And yes, I do still have the tin lol it looks like I can screw it off, but either way that little bastardo is gone. And that cover in the middle, is that the heat shield? Or something else that doesn't have anything to do with it.

Yea I found the tin thing, I can take care of that myself :) Thanks

@BKxterra718 well I didn't know what the problem was and I didn't know what an exhaust heat shield was and I couldn't find a picture online for xterras and not a real good description so I thought I'd have them take a look, but I'm probably going to cancel.

Yes I did thank you. I'm going to take a look at it when I get the chance, and sorry, I don't have internet where I live so I have to check my messages when I have downtime at work.

not to long ago I had taken my X in for a leaky radiator, they replaced it under warranty (nice!!) and had mentioned a few other things to take a look at while it was in the shop. I already knew i had to pull off the heat shield clamp and replace it. Which I had done twice before in other spots. well i get a call back that the need to replace the rad, and that the heat shields needed to be re secured. but I already knew that and told them not to . he said ok. i go and pick up the truck the next day, and were going over the things that had been done. noticed the price was a bit higher then he stated over the phone. well, they decided to repair the heat shield anyway even though i told them not to. 50$ so we get the manager and tell him whats going on. I told him that i had a new clamp at home that i paid $1.50 for and was going to do it myself. He said it was going to take more then 1 clamp. So i said, ok, $3.00 for 2. after a bit of talking, they took that fee off the bill. That's BS they wanted $50 bucks for two clamps and labor ... Just a lil story about how much of a rip off the stealership is.
