Bags, G.H.B or B.O.B. what is in yours?

So first off for those who are wondering a G.H.B. is, it is a Get Home Bag; for getting home just incase disaster strikes. And a B.O.B. is a Bug Out Bag; for Going on the run if something happens where you must flee your residence.

These bags are not for just "survival" emergencies but also for little day to day needs.

I have a G.H.B. Because if things got bad I have no where to run so I would just have to hold out at the house and I want to make sure I can get there.

I am by no means the end authority on things of this nature, I'm learning new things everyday.
But here are a few things in my bag.

Spare socks, undies and thermal undies, multiple means for creating fire, a few shelter building materials. a fold up G.I. shovel, compass or two, an emergency whistle, spare knife, spare AA batteries, first aid kit, mini survival kit, water purifier, spare magazines :) for light reading :) and more that i can't think of with out unpacking everything.

Here are some old pictures from when I first started building my bag.

I have a bag that stays in my X. The contents change as the seasons change but some of the things that stay in there are: 2 knives, 2 lighters, wet weather gear, some simple first aid stuff, some extra rounds for the sig, eye and ear protection and a flashlight. I like some of the things you keep in yours like the water purifier and such. I think I might build a bag similar.

They can be had for a lot less then $222. Google finds several between $170 and $150.

Are you going to drag it with you every day or are you going to keep it in your X?

Here's a different one for $144

and here's the Talon more like the prices your talking at $164.

The first one you have listed is a Mother Load and is very large.....think 5 days camping without support large. The Talon is more like a 3-day assault pack, maybe a touch smaller. Are you going to drag it with you every day or are you going to be keeping it in your X?

I'm not in the market at the moment. I'm thinking for the purposes of this thread. I'd keep it in the X or as my ready made bag for buggin out. I don't carry much stuff with me on a regular basis. My wife has put together a couple emergency bags in case of Tornado but they are already stuffed to the gills and they don't even have some of the stuff on this list. Eventually I'd like to consolidate it all to one bag for the X and a secondary emergency bag to keep in our other vehicle.

OK. ;) As far as the list goes you don't need to have everything on it. BOB's are a very personal thing and you have to find what works best for you and there is no one list fits all solution. The recognized standards are 3 weeks without food and 3 days without water and obviously those are going to be heavily affected by the conditions and terrain you are trying to negotiate. My set up leans heavily towards hydration and only snacks for food. Since I travel with mine all the time I'm always trying to find ways to save weight so as a result I have what I need to survive not what I need to be comfortable.

As far as a bag to toss into your truck and not tote around with you I would find a medium size ALICE pack without the frame but with the shoulder straps. They can be had ridiculously cheap and are a very tough roomy packs. The large ALICE packs are HUGE and must be used with the frame as the straps attach to the frame and not the pack like on the medium size ones. ALICE packs can be had all day long for $25 to $55 dollars. The only thing they lack for my needs are a dedicated hydration carrier pouch but other then that they are a great deal for a BOB.

ALICE packs starting at $13.00 with no frame.

2 ALICE packs with frames for $50 shipped and a nice video showing the size comparison of the two.

How did I forget paracord?!?!?

Like RacerXXl Said, this is NOT the MUST have list. Just suggestions for things you might need depending on your personal situation.

I love the thought of being prepared for anything. I am going to start on a B.O.B. and will definately be keeping tabs on this thread.

LOL

My X IS my BOB and GHB, because if I'm leaving the stuff in the anyway, I don't need it all in ANOTHER bag.

I have Molle pockets on the seatbacks, and can stuff things as needed. Large items, like chainsaws, etc, just go in the cargo compartment, etc.

:D

I've got some survival whistle buckles for sale at facebook.com/FINK550 that would go great with a G.H.B. or B.O.B.

Some of this is other miscellaneous stuff, but..

75' of 1/2" Life Safety rated rope
2 locking CLIMBING rated 'biners
12' of 1/2" webbing
10' of 1/2" webbing

..and that's just for my truck. I have the same setup for my fire gear, but also with a Class II harness.

if you're building bags to throw in the X in event of needing to bounce, don't waste your money on big fancy assault packs or hiking packs or any of that type of stuff, just go find cheap army surplus duffle bags. you can stuff hot/cold weather gear, wet gear, several days worth of clothing, a full case of MRE's, and a ton more stuff. with two of them, you should be able to pack for two weeks at least for two people, and have everything you could need for your locally surrounding environments, and if you're packing survival gear for environments that you aren't IMMEDIATELY fleeing to, you had better be sure you're going to need it. As far as the duffles, two of them fit fantastically (with room to spare) between the roof rails of the xterra, a single ratchet strap through the grab handles locks em down to the roof, and you're set to go. pack em, keep em packed, and in the house/garage ready to go the second you realize you need them.
