I am at the Atlanta Auto Show as I type this and spoke at length with the product specialist about the 2015 Xterra. According to them we will absolutely get a new X and it will be completely redesigned.

Hope this is for real. If it's going to be a complete redesign for 15, I don't see how they have kept it quiet the whole time though

Crossing fingers. This needs to happen.

So I take it your ready to see an Xterra badge on a crossover with independent suspension on all corners, part time PTO driven AWD without a transfer case, a complex and impossible to modify suspension, less ground clearance, smaller tires, more plastic, feminine styling, and no guts? They haven't done that before, right? (Pathfinder, cough cough.)

I hope you are right, and Nissan proves me wrong, I really really do. But if I've learned anything from Ford and Jeep, it's that a redesign of any 4x4 is not something that needs to happen. Not until CAFE is figured out by the masses to be the joke it is. I believe we had it as good as it was going to get with the Xterra in the 2nd Generation. If they redesign it, and I do mean that as an "if" statement, I have a bad feeling we won't like what comes out of it.

I know we say it will be built on a Frontier platform, but they could just as easily design something on a Rogue platform and slap a Xterra nameplate on it. After all, how many people in Honda Elements, Ford Escape, Jeep Compass, Subaru Forresters, and Hyundai Santa Fe think they have an "adventurous" vehicle? As long as people think AWD means the same as 4X4, (and honestly there is no official naming convention that determines exactly what 4x4 or AWD really means when it's slapped on a body panel as a shiny chrome badge) they think it will go anywhere, and in all reality, given most people buy it for feel good security when it snows, it will serve them well in that capacity. But it won't be what us true 4x4 enthusiasts want.

Don't be knocking Element ;) I loved mine.... 2wd of course
Best car I have ever owned

I hear ya. I loved my Escape as well, and I put it on my list of poser adventurous vehicles as well. They are probably all great at what they were made for, but off road was not it.

Dave, I can totally see you rolling in this:

This will be awesome to see a 3rd Gen Xterra, but like said, they need to keep it to it's original roots... Offroad. None of this AWD crap. 4x4 with the ability to hit the trails right off the lot, just like all the X's we own to this day.

I'd be fine with an AWD setup. So long as it has the option to lock in true 4wd and low range transfer case.
That would be nice, but I feel like that would cost Nissan a lot more money than it's worth. They should make it in two models, a basic 4x4 and then a Pro4x, with locked axles and springs up front, making sure its ready for some real trails (sorry if my knowledge is lacking in this post)

I think if they build the next gen it will stay true to what it is...
Im guessing two options.. S and Pro-4x
I bet you will see a turbo 4cyl and 4.0 options..

ZD30 would be a nice option for the 4cyl. It's currently an option on the Navara.

i can kind of agree with this. i think they should just simplify it to two trims, and since they're doing a diesel in the titan, pop a smaller one in the x.

the pro-4x should be lifted with better tires than those crappy stock ones, though. doubtful, but wishful thinking.

Hopefully Nissan realizes it still has to compete with Toyota and the next PRO-4X will feature equipment comparable to the new TRD Pro stuff (lift and 1" increased travel, skids, remote resi Bils, BFG ATs)

I could see pro4-x getting the Cummings... But here is the thing.. Your going to be looking at a 38k SUV.

Go for it Nissan!

I hope it isn't as ugly as the new Pathfinder.

This is my worry, the redesign will be a pathfinder on steroids.
Not holding my breath that it will be actually off road worthy. Something more like the new Cherokees, blinged up creature comforts and gadgets and totally ruin it.

The one thing I really love about the X is it's simplicity-none of the added garbage like 12-way power seats with heated massaging aromatherapeutic lumbar support, wrapped in the leather of a grass-fed calf from Barcelona. It's going to be a sad day if they move the X in that direction.

There is legit a guy down here that rocks and element with a slight lift and aftermarket wheels and all terrains. I give him props.

i hope they keep the xterra kind of like the STi's: it's purpose built and there are no crazy and unnecessary add-ons. the 04-07 STI's were $34k and didn't come with great sound, electric seats, true leather, anything like that. they're built for pure driver enjoyment on the twisties.

the xterra needs to be the same concept, but for off road enjoyment. put the money in functionality, not luxury. we don't need another rogue or pathfinder...

And add a solid front axle... >.>
