Which Hi-lift jack?

Any, Depending on what you have done and plan on doing. If you are SAS then you need the 60" otherwise the 48" does well enough as long as you have jackpoints on your vehicle. Another thing to think about is where you will store it.

I went with the Extreme just because it was on sale or the same price as the regular hi lift. as well no regrets with the slider adaptor that Metzican just posted works really well with the hefty and shrock sliders

I've always been real nervous about lifting on the sliders. I feel like it'd be so unstable as well as difficult to lift one side high enough to get the tire off the ground. I've lifted it from the front and it was perfectly okay, but lifting on the slider? Idk about that. I'd suggest getting the Hi-Lift jack mate as well. You can lift it using the tire, and then put a jack stand under the truck so you can change the tire.

LOL

The other tires typically stay on the ground when you lift one slider. If you use the tire mate, you can't drive off a high center either. The jack stands can slip under the frame, or the slider, etc...once the hi-lift has it up enough.

You can also use a bottle jack/scissor jack under the diff if there's room, etc....but the problem off road is that often, there's a rock in the way, or, its under water/mud, etc...hence the hi-lift's versatility.

If off camber/on very uneven ground, hi-lifts, or any other jack, can allow the rig to tip off the jack once raised...so you always want to chock the tires well to help prevent unintended motion....and, in extreme cases, even run a strap to a rock or tree, for the rig and/or jack, to counter a tip before commencing.

48" farm jack from Harbor Freight

Works like a charm for 40 bucks.

Use jack stands though...I love HF but would still be hesitant to have their tools responsible for keeping a vehicle from falling on me...

Oh wait...my jack stands are HF too...DOH!!!!!

3-Ton HF jacks, folded over JUST holding up front end (Rear is still on the tires).

The reason the rig didn't fall over when the 3-ton jack stand (holding only ~ 1/4 of the rig's weight), folded, was the chains, some of which you can see here.

If it had not been chained, it would have flopped right over.

WOW TJTJ...dare I ask how that happened? Looks like the front end was raised and shifted laterally on the jackstand?

I was doing an engine swap and also the LCA, so, I had the rig up on stands in front (Engine Stand just visible in edge of shot). To help make sure I didn't knock it over, I also chained it to a tree and chocked the wheels, etc.

I came out the next day and the rig had flopped over, and was hanging by the chains. The Harbor Fright's had folded over (Both, but one was worse...the other is harder to see, but, if you look close enough, you'll see its base is no longer planted on the driveway, one side is tilted up, etc).

Both of the Harbor Fright 3-ton jack stands were bent and had to be chucked. Neither jack had any where NEAR 3-tons on it, closer to 1/2 ton each if that....and they FAILED.

So, the jacks failed just standing there with no one even working on the rig, etc....overnight.

Chinese Steal (Spelled wrong on purpose, so its spelled correctly...) doing what it does best, FAILING.

:D

So, I don't like to work under a rig unless its stable and held up in a safe fashion...so I use jack stands instead of just the hi-lift or floor jack, etc....but, if I can't count on the jack stands to hold a fraction of their rated capacity, they're worthless.

It it had not been chained, it would have been a lot worse...and, if I'd been UNDER it when that HF stuff failed,...it would have been even worse than that, except maybe for the nice check from the insurance Co to my wife, etc.

That's no joke on the Chinese "steal" either. I check the chemistry and tensile strengths in order to approve all the steel that goes through our shop. Our oil & gas customers have very exacting standards for the raw material that we make their parts from. Chinese steel manufacturer flat out lie on their MTRs. We ordered a test piece of some material because the MTR had tensile and impact values that were right on the money, but because it was Chinese we decided to test it first. The lab results for the mechanical properties were so far off from what the mill had reported that we thought the vendor had sent us the wrong material, so we had a chemical analysis done as well. Sure enough, it was what we ordered.

The mills can get away with that shiz because they know they'll never have to face our court system, and they honestly do not care about the quality of the stuff they export to us. I can't wait for the NHTSA to get their hands on Chinese cars. I fully expect the crash tests to be catastrophically bad.

+1 on the Chinese cars. Top Gear awesomely showcased how terrible their cars are and how blatantly knocked off they are. I could go into detail about my distrust for Chinese products, but that's something that would have to reserved for the VIP area

Holy crap TJ! Did you send those pics/story to HF?

Back in topic... I think I didn't own a measuring device when I ordered my hilift. It is quite possibly the largest one they sell?! (it was on sale at the time of purchaseso I figured wth, can't be that big) Granted, I have used it MANY times, more on other rigs than mine, and I'm glad it is so large. BUT, it's a real pain to figure out where to store it. I made a home made rear bumper mount for it and that worked great until I moved to northern Michigan and the snow and road funk beat it up pretty bad. I have since taken it off of the bumper and plan on making a home made mount for it on the inside of the X. One of my many back burner projects for now.

So you are asking why not put it on the roof rack like a lot of folks do? Because that bastard is heavy and I don't want to smash my window out or dent/scratch the X. I don't mind bumps of bruises if they are earned. lol

Very clever jack mount. Definitely not the best place for northern climates, but where is a GOOD place outside the truck for northern climates??

Anyone have photos of a 60" Hi-lift on a Shrock bumper? Trying to decide if it would be way too tall with that bumper mount.

I can tell you the 48" sticks up a teeny bit higher than the roof rails. I know that because when I go through some low parking garages, the roof rails clear, and the top of the hi-lift scrapes off ceiling pipe insulation and clangs the hanging florescent light fixtures, etc.

The 60" sticks up about a foot taller than the 48" (Me rockin my killer math skills...), so, a bit more than a foot over your rails.

48" Hi-Lift on Shrock Rear Bumper, 2" BL.

The higher your BL, the less jack sticks up over the roof.

Thanks! I think the 48" is all I want then.

Yeah I was gonna say, a 60" is wider than the X (or dang close to it) so 60" vertical from the bumper would be a flag pole! I guess if you ever did want to fly a flag, that would be a great way to do it! Even diagonal would be cutting it very close. I don't have back seats anymore and if I store the jack inside, it goes almost from the back hatch to the front seats! It's a beast!

Ordered the 48" extreme today. Figured the price difference was less than buying a jack mate. Also ordered some 6 ton Torin jack stands. Hopefully they will not act like TJ's did.

LOL, well, if the 3-ton jacks folded over with ~ 800 lb on them, maybe the 6-ton could take almost 1,600 lb?

The hi lift extreme is cast if I remember right.. I have a 54" smitybilt and a 48" hi lift extreme. The extreme may not fit on the shrock mount.. I know te base is larger

Hmmm did not realize there was any difference in the plate.

The hi-lift bottom plate comes OFF to mount on the Shrock carrier (Cotter pin to put it back on/off, etc)

If you use a jack that doesn't have a removable plate, well, you'd have to mount it upside down or something. :D

If the plates come off, it won't matter what sized plate you took off before putting the jack stand in the carrier.

I guess in three months or so I will find out if it fits.

Again, the jack standard is what goes into the Shrock carrier mount...you take the plate OFF to put it into the carrier mount. As long as the plate comes off (Hi-lift plate comes off)....it will fit.

Don't think I would have ever got the pitman arm nut off of the gear box without my hi-lift handle as a cheater bar. Nice to see other uses for that tool.
