So the best way to describe this problem is by video..

Everything still works fine. Park, reverse, neutral, and drive. However, it just doesn't feel like it FULLY gets into D, as far as the shifter position goes. It still operates fine, but I can't go past drive. I can't shift into 2 or 1. It seems to me like a mechanical (maybe linkage?) problem.

What would be your advice on what this could be and how to go about fixing it?

you will have to get under the truck and inspect the linkage itself to see if there is something worn out.

A guy that I used to wheel with had an issue of not being able to go into 1 or 2nd at all, turned out to be a piece of corn cob stuck in a big chunk of mud blocking the linkage.

That's likely since I just now noticed this after a shop gutted my cats.. I'll have to take a look at that when I get a chance.
