Coilover conversion

What do you guys think if there was a Coilover conversion option. I am looking at different custom front end modifications and I think I may try this and post up how to do it. Anyhow if you could do it for around $500 would you do it to get rid of those horrible torsion bars? I think I will end up doing this to play around a bit.

I've never had a problem with my torsion bars but I have thought it would be nice to have coilovers. It seems like that would offer a lot more options for suspension tuning. If there was a fairly easy and reasonably priced way to do it I'd go for it.

Well guys I know it can be done for around $500 if you do all the work yourself. I will proceed in a layout of parts and start the conversion once everything on paper jives. After I successfully complete it I will post up parts used and what I did to get it to work. That way us 1st gen guys have another option. I think it would be a neat little project.

if you spend money on good coils though that's what gets expensive. i just bought icon coilovers for my next project. 1.2k for them... stupid prices on good ones.

I've considered it but wasn't sure how it would hold up in the long term. The suspension arms aren't super thick construction. With torsion bars the load is spread over the arm rather then a point on the arm directly. Its super tight to fit. My fox shocks with hoops required multiple mock ups. The issue is the cv swings right where the shock lower needs to mount requiring the shock to be angled. If you made tall mounts on the arm to extend over the cv it may work but then it would change the working angle as it applies travel causing it to progress funny. If you made custom arms it would possible to fit. Like the total chaos arms which are wider by I believe 2" a side. As far as benifits it wouldn't be termendous especially with the leaf springs in the back. The arms are just to short to work right offroad. A little smoother progression of travel and the ability to fine tune the spring rate would be nice.

Coilovers are awesome. Anyone ever corner weighed an Xterra, first or 2nd gen? I bet they're pretty close. If you worked the geometry right, I'd bet you could use 2nd gen coilovers right off the shelf, if that were something you wanted to do. Though, I'd rather have an upper shock hoop than the bucket style mount the 2nd gens use, and I bet most of you guys would too. Lots more coilover options that way. I'll be following with interest, and if I were closer, I'd love to help out any way I could.
