Like, I feel like im in a windtunnel when I start the x in my garage. It is so loud and obnoxious on a cold start. Does anyone have this as well? Is it common? OR IS MY FAN JUST TOO DAMN GOOD AT ITS JOB?!

But for real, whats the deal.

(above rhyme was not on purpose, but awesome nonetheless)

Check your fan clutch.

Hide the key so no one can start the truck. Then reach under hood and try to turn the fan with your hand. You should be able to turn it by hand. If the clutch is bad it will be locked up and not able to be turned. By which case the fan will be running full bore all the time. Creating the noise you mentioned.

Parts are between $35 and $65 if you do it yourself. If you take it to a mechanic, their labor charges will vary, but it shouldn't take more than two hours.

Just kidding, forgot I had to run to the store for something, checked it then and I can turn it by my hand easily. Any other idea?

Ive got the same thing. And its not even that cold where i live either! but it only happens when its cold out, or a cold start. Sometimes if i dont shift till 4500 RPMs then it will stop, and others it just get REALLY loud and obnoxious. Especially on the highway!

I dont know though.. Because I recently got my exhuast done, and when I revved it while the engine was hot the fan was more quiet then the start up.

But it usually idles that long for about 5 to 10 minutes, or until I shift it in gear.

If its cold the engine will have a high idle condition. Its own best attempt to bring heat to itself quickly. Its normal.

The fan kicks on because the fan has a fluid coupler. We all know what happens to fluids in low tempatures. They thicken. Because the fluid is thick it makes it hard to pass between the fluid impeller within the fan clutch. So the fan kicks on till the fluid warms enough for it to distribute and disconnect.

It kicks on hard but a block or so down the road mine is usually off.
