This is my Xterra 06.
Since the snow storm it's been weird braking. The streets are clear but when I brake, the truck feels like I'm driving on snow. Today i noticed the front passenger side is covered in rust. When i feel the rotors, 3 of them are smooth whereas the front passenger side rotor is quite rough. Is this a brake problem, i would have though both sides would wear simultaneously. I'm clearly not a mechanic, so that's why I'm asking lol. Thanks for your time...
I just did the brakes on my 07. I learned some things about the early 2nd gen brakes.
The lower caliper pins have a stupid rubber boot on them that decays causing the pin to be come lodged in place. When the caliper pins freeze the caliper can't float and self center like it's supposed to. When that happens the brakes do not wear evenly and can lead to premature failure.
The reason I did my front brakes was because I noticed a metal on metal sound when I came to a stop. That is a clear indication that the brake pad material is all gone and you're actually stopping with the steel backing plate. That's no good.
When I broke everything down I found that both lower caliper pins were seized. I was able to free the passenger side pin, replace the stupid rubber, and reinstall it. The drivers side pin was so seized I had to replace the caliper bracket, pins, boots, the lot.
Id be willing to bet this is the same case with yours.
