frontier fender flares

A while ago, this was a topic of discussion on some other site...whether Frontier fender flares could be adapted and used on an X. There are some issues, most notably the existence of rear doors on the X and absence of same on Frontys, but who knows when you get creative, right?

So...had anyone tried? I have been waiting for some fronty flares to show up to mess with, looks like I finally got my chance. 2003 white 2wd, parting out. I'm going to go look at em tomorrow and see what I can figure out for Terra. Wish me luck...

i think there was a guy on CX who actually had the fronty fenders on a 00. Believe he did the front because he had lots of travel don't remember his name. does that fronty that's getting parted out have DR rims by chance?

You will need the front fenders to make them work in the front... And they plain just wont fit in the back due to the doors and the gas lid... Trust me I have wanted to do this for a while and have tried to line up some flares on the rear and it just won't happen... Fronts will work fine if you use the front fenders

Unfortunately, because of the shape of the Xterra fenders and the proximity of the back doors, this is the only type of fender extension we can use. The good news is that it's universal and will work with both 1st and 2nd gen Xterras.

Here is a customer image from Amazon of this type of flare on a Titan.

Yeah, i'm aware of the issue with the doors, and I figured the fronts will fit nicely. What I want to try and do with the rears is cut them into two pieces and affix one piece to to back door, as I have seen on other four-door SUVs with bushwackers. It may not work, but I'm going to give it a shot, because the price is right. I'll let y'all know how it goes. I hate those generic flares - looks like lawn edging

The problem with that is that Frontiers have round fenders and Xterras have squared off fenders. The Paladin in China is basically an Xterra body with Frontier wheel arches and front end. But fender flare for the Frontier won't even match the shape of the wheel arches on an Xterra. If you find a way around that, you'll have a number of folks begging you to make them a set, so I hope you you can figure it out.

Ive been looking at either frontier flairs or pathy flairs.. I know id have to cut them for the doors.
Ive been waiting on a junk yard to have one I could pull from..

I also have been planning a trip to 4wd in Nashville to test fit a few types...

Of course, there's probably no good way to actually cut or modify the existing flares without making them look like sh*t...but might as well check it out

Xterror - when you tried to line up the rears, did you think about a cutout? Or two pieces?
Yes.. You will essentially have one price on the door and the other on the fender... But it just looks off to me because the xterra already has a built in type of flare so when the other flares are up there it kind of looks double flared... The other issue is mounting it to the door...you either have to drill into the door or hold it on with tape.. Lol... I'm not trying to be discouraging... It just requires a lot of fab work for it to really look good that's why I canned the idea... If you can get some for cheap then go for it... Heck I think it would look cool if you just had the front ones

Anyone tried using flares made for a Jeep Cherokee? The wheel arch is about the same size and shape as the Xterra.

I personally like this style better than the pocket flares, but to each his/her own. I'm tempted to find a used set of these and try them out on my rig.

I've got my buddies jeep sitting in my driveway for 5 months... Every day I think how much he would notice of they disappeared off his truck.

I hope somebody will come up with a nice looking solution for second gens.
With a future full Titan swap possible, the tires too far out of the wheel wells is my main concern, as UT safety inspections keep getting tougher and stricter.

So many people doing the mod now, surely there's a market....

I sent Bushwacker an email this morning, and already got a response (impressive). The gentleman said he'd pass this info onto their development crew for consideration.

Is it really that expensive for a company like that to take a few measurements and throw some numbers in a computer and produce a 100 sets? I've never understood their whole " enough interest".

It's the cost of machining an injection mold. If they don't get it perfect on the first try, then they have machine a new one. It not like they're just printing these up on a 3d printer (though that might be the future of plastics, gonna have to look into that). If they only sell 100 sets at $500 each, they've barely paid for the molds, the time it took to measure and model each wheel arch, test fitting, etc. Compare that to the tens of thousands of sets they can sell for F-150s, Silverados, Jeeps, Rams, and there's no point to it other than the goodwill of a small group of customers. I'm sure they'd love to help us out, but it may not be a good business decision.

Unless they're using some other technology besides injection molding, it's pretty expensive to bring a new item to market. 3D printing, now that the printers themselves are getting bigger and less expensive, and able to create items in different, more flexible and more resilient materials, is going to bring the price of stuff like that down considerably, but I imagine it'll be 5-10 years before consumers start seeing the benefits of that.

I saw that same video someone put on CX because of his unique front bumper. Here is a screenshot I snapped of the bumper but you can see the fender flares also.
