Gear Oil

So I am getting ready to put my BTF diff cover on, do the breather extension and change my diff fluid. I am trying to decide between Royal Purple and Lucas. I run Lucas products in just about every part of my vehicle and always did in my dirtbike. However, I have heard good things about Royal Purple too. What is the Nation's suggestion?

I use this, front and rear axles:

You'll get as many opinions on brand of oil as people suggesting. I like Mobil 1, no particular reason, it's just handy at the local stores, and it isn't the cheapest so I don't think it's junk. But in reality, it doesn't matter what brand you get if you do a few things.

Get oil that meets the specifications required for your application. (Sometimes you can fudge a bit on viscosity, but I'd be careful. For example I run 75W-90 in my front diff, it calls for 80W-90, but I don't want to stock 2 oils.)

And change your oil regularly, at least by the recommended intervals. I think the gear oils are about 30,000miles.

I had to re-seal my rear diff and I used royal purple 75w-140. Earlier models of the Pro-4X called for that weight and that was the only thing I could find locally that would work.

Have had it in for about 5k miles or so now.

Its a bit like deciding which is the best beer or what the best color Xterra is. Both those options will work both will net above stock lubrication qualities. Can't go wrong.

I have the BTF cover just make sure your diff cover has a nice flat mating surface all around mine I had to reseal 2 times and have my friend resurface mine for me to get a good seal and weld the fill plug so just check the cover after filling it and driving around for a while. Id say royal purple if you have the extra money its about 20 bucks a quart or go with mobile onewhich is usually around 10 or 12 bucks, lucas I haven't heard good things about in comparison tests among the major gear oils

I like Royal Purple but I don't like the price. I use Mobil 1. It definitely held up well between changes. I don't remember how many miles ~ maybe 10k?
I peeled the cover so had to reseal/refill. Then got a diff cover and changed oil again while I was in there- thus the fewer miles between changes.

I use Amsoil severe gear in both front and back as well as in the transfer case. No problems and I swear it just feels like it drives better. I do go off road a couple times a month so I feel like the severe gear gives me a little piece of mind.

Thanks for all of the input guys. I think I will go Royal Purple and then the next 30k try Amsoil. Just see if there is any difference. Also, I bought the DIY diff cover and after welding we hit it with the surface grinder to make sure there was no heat distortion.
