I would say extra fuses the minis and the normal ones and some relays. Those thing will really screw up your day if ya don't have any

Gas, gas, and more gas. All season mats, preferably weathertech, beefier rear leafs or helper springs, different y-pipe or 2 in 1 out muffler and a tuner

Something I learned the first time ever taking it offroad - Tow Strap

Oh, some sort of rear recovery. Heck, if you can, an upgrade on your front recovery as well.

And replace the rear hatch struts right away, the stock ones are horrible. 3 concussions later . . .

Bought an X
Rear recovery
Recovery strap
Basic set of tools
Once you lift, Hi lift jack or something similar. The stock jack is useless at that point.
Good tire iron, stock one is useless from the get-go.

I still moved mine, cuz I have had water in my front diff.

I took a 6' piece of 3/16" ID fuel vapor hose, and replace the entire hose from the diff all the way up. Now it end is almost up to top of the hood and firewall.

The original hose that went down to my front diff fit pretty loose over the barbed tube on the mount. A 3/16" fuel hose fits really snug.

I don't do a lot of mud, but the rear diff extension is one of those little mods I've been meaning to get around to.

This is really specific to gen 2s but:

Recovery points front and rear
Good recovery strap
Another rig to wheel with (especially if you don't have a winch)
Jumper cables
Flashlight
Basic sockets/wrenches/drivers/hammer
Sliders have been the best mod I've done, if only for piece of mind
A CB is a good idea

Plenty more stuff I'm leaving out, but I wouldn't go wheeling without at least what I've mentioned above.

I recall hearing that the jack and lug nut wrench are of minimal value; is it worth having a old 4-way in the tool box?

They work just as well (or just as badly) as any other vehicles stock scissor jack and lug wrench. If you're at stock ride height and need to change a tire due to a flat or something it works just fine. Not something id want to use all the time though.

I keep a breaker bar tucked in by the e-brake handle to fit the lugs. Serves two uses - better than the the stock lug nut wrench and is heavier if I have to intimidate someone.

Second part hasn't happened yet, but you never know.
