Guys.

It it with much disappointment and a heavy heart that I announce that cancelation of goneMOAB.

Grand County has denied our event permit. We got the initial rejection 2 weeks ago which is when we closed registration. We, of course, filed an appeal. Got statements from all the agencies we deal with that demonstrated our legacy and commitment. They didn't care. The fact that our dates fed into a holiday weekend meant that they would not approve the permit. We got the denial of our appeal yesterday.

I'm of the belief that Grand county doesn't want automotive events anymore.

We will be refunding everyone's registration fees.

Please join us live on YouTube at 4pm Pacific. So we can explain the entire situation and what will be happening going forward.

https://youtube.com/live/Mf6abEnuMo0?feature=share

I am truly heart broken. And I'm sorry.

Thier reasoning seems to be "we don't want automotive events"
You mean like EJS or Cruise Moab that are happening this year?

I know many Moabites are pissed about the SxS noise, but a Nissan event that brings in a little over a hundred rigs a year?...

This is dumb, and I'm sorry.

That sucks. Would they approve it if it were a week that didn’t start or end with a holiday?
The problem is the delay. When the first denial happened we had already got out BLM & parks service permits. And we have to register the dates with them a year in advance. So there was no changing them at 60 days out.

maybe try sand hollow or silverton co
Spent many happy summers in Silverton. Great place. The passes are often not open til early to mid-June depending on snow. River crossings are more exciting in early summer too You can do some great 2-3 day trips too not sure if there is enough lodging in silverton but used to be lots of camping. I love that place

I know it’s a different terrain and in a very different part of the country but don’t be afraid to check out ecxc 2023. I’ve done ecxc as a driver numerous times and passenger at gone. Both are excellent times.

Don’t forget Hanksville with the western side of Canyonlands to the east and capital reef to the west along with the Henry mtns to north and south there are loads of trails across the desert. I think it’s still fairly unknown for the average visitor. Not the family side of the NPS and BLM. The trail out to the Dollhouse is pretty amazing

Back in the 70’s I did uranium exploration out there. Moab had like 3 motels and a McDonald’s. That was about it. Really changed since then. When we first road slick rock on mtn bikes you could camp anywhere out there you wanted. Lot more free back then and a lot fewer people messing the place up

Don't want to stay in town though. Might just crash in Junction, wheel a day, and trailer the storage stuff home.
Take a look at Ballard RV Park in Thompson Springs, (Vrbo listing). See if they have any of the cabins available, and if the price is right. ;)

The entire Maze district is permit only. 3 Rigs and 9 people per group limit. May not travel together with other groups, and every camp site is reserved with your permit months and months in advance.

Wow. Guess I’m too old for this now. Is the entire west by reservation now? We just used to pull off the trails and camp in what was the middle of nowhere. But I guess it’s been a while It’s why I like Hawaii. If you pretend you are fishing you can camp anywhere along the coast. Ah well, I am now That Grumpy Old Guy I guess. It was fun while it lasted

There's definitely still some places in Utah that you can get away from people. But it's much harder than it used to be.

Back then when we kids from Boulder would show up around SLC with our hang gliders they would pull the children off the street. Easier to be alone for sure ;) that was before they put houses on point of the mountain. Had some great flights off Mt Francis and Willard. Don’t know if people still fly hang gliders there. Mostly paragliders these days. Loved it there though. My brother was in the AF at Hill AFB for a long time. SLC can be pretty nice.

Hey! I just joined to get in on this discussion. I have a couple questions and ideas and I don’t feel like watching the video again. Is the cost because of the dates or are they two separate issues? What if we remove the Monday, and maybe even the Tuesday from the event? Would it be more likely to be approved? Cheaper? Are there good trails in neighbouring counties? Should we get the businesses we support to pressure the county to be reasonable?
I still plan on going, at least that is what I’m thinking right now. Is this the place to make plans to meet? Club frontier has been quiet on this year’s event.

What we were told is that any event preceding or following the holiday weekend was a non starter for the newly minted "county events commission."

That said, I want to wheel a few days. Still might head that way.

But nothing, at this point, will allow the event to take place in Grand County during our time frame.

What that means is we can have no larger than 9 vehicles on a group and can have no "guided trail activities" within the county. Any violation of that will incur a $10k per day/per occurrence fine. That also means that we can't do any of the normal event activities. Dinners. Raffles. Organized gatherings.

Its clear by thier actions that the county doesn't want our business.

It ufcking sucks. And I'm still mad about it.

They can't do anything about individuals. But if anything resembling an event is caught, we end up in serious financial doodoo.

Well aware, I was thinking july/august, it really is a magical place if you’re not familiar
My favorite is the RioGrande side of Stony Pass. Just beautiful and so remote. Spent 2 summers living in a cabin at the headwaters of Bear Creek which forks sw off the RioGrande headwaters. Such a remarkable place

Now that it’s May, I thought I should see how many still plan to head to Moab for roughly the same week as was planned. Maybe send me a message here if I can tag along on some of your trail day plans. I don’t want to get close to the ten rig limit, I would just feel better with someone to help out as off-roaders sometimes need.

Let me know if anyone is going to be in Grand Junction next weekend and wants to do some wheeling. There is a small group of GONE refugees meeting there for some trails.

Grand Junction is on my way to Moab so I have a camp site booked there for the Saturday night. Was planning to bike but I’m interested to see what you have in mind.

Are you there early Saturday? We are doing Coon Hollow Saturday which might be a wash depending on how the river sections is. Sunday we are doing Bangs Canyon to Tabeguach which is a great trail for all skill levels and rigs.
