Hey guys as you all know Ms KGB bought her a 2009 Xterra..

We are looking for some info on tires... We are looking at BFG KO's or Durratracs unless you all can sway us some other way. We want an aggressive look with out going full MT.
Right now this truck will be a family cruiser and light off road Xterra.. Im looking for ride, and all weather use most of all.

SIZES..16" rim 285's on up.. I know the melt mod is needed.. What is the real range of tire? I have read others going up to a 305 but did they need to trim at all?

Since I will not get this X for 2 year these tires will need to last ;)

I'd go with the ko's. They are proven and will last till you get it and then some...:)

To me the only problem with ko's is that they don't self clean. They bog down in mud very quickly for me. I don't have any knowledge on the gy duratracs but they look good.

I love my KO's. But, the tires seem outdated. Don't get me wrong they are terrific tires. They wear like iron and have a terrific balance of on and offroad handling. Still the best treads I've had long as your not a rock crawler. Just its a old design. I feel there are now more modern tires with better sipe designs and tread compounds to get better performance in rain and snow.

I like the Cooper S/T Maxx. This look aggresive, but good for the roads too.

You'd definitely need a lift for 305s or do some fender trimming because their are wide. 285s are really popular. I have 255 km2s and love them. Not the worlds greatest on ice, but they get the job done. They are also taller than the 285s and I still get around 20mpg (6MT though).

Its hard to go wrong with either duratracs or ko's...the cooper AT3 is also out now.

The 305's are 20 mm wider in section width than the 285's, so they protrude in the wells 10 mm more to either side, not too bad really.

305/70's tend to have a proportionally wider TREAD than the 285/75's though, and are the same diameter, so off road and flotation traction, etc, is better, as the tread patch is the same length but wider.

This is why the 285's are considered 11.5's.

Great info guys...
Remember this is going on a Gen 2..

I have ran the Duratracs and KO's as well as KM2's on my Gen 1 and other trucks in the past, Since this will be a light duty SUV the KM2s will be out for now.
My Gen 1 will be moving back to KM2s next year.

This may sound lame to some but I really want the aggressive look so Im not sure some of the basic AT's will cut it. If any Gen 2 guys are running the tires they suggest
please post up... Im not buying any till mid Feb so I have all winter to see whats out there.

I had Toyo Open Country AT's on my black Xterra and really liked them, but they are really expensive. The Open Country M/T's are even more expensive, but they look really aggressive.
You might want to look at the Nitto Terra and Trail Grapplers. They are made by Toyo but don't cost nearly as much.

Side note: My uncle, who has Open Country M/T's on his F-150, reports that the tread roar is really loud on the highway. So that might be a deal breaker for you on those.

nitto terra grapplers. got buddies on them for....95,000 MILES! tons of people run these things. very very popular AT. as for at with agressiveness, im honestly going with nitto trail grapplers, due to the versatility. they last about 50,000 miles, but look like a full blown M/T. ask nm2000. i have some buddies on those as well. nitto is a sister to toyo. very durable tire company from what ive seen. thats always been my biggest eal was tread life. my AT2 grabbers just wore out quick for the tread pattern they have...
