Lost first gear

Just like the title says. I went to start my Xterra, stepped on the clutch, shifted gears, stepped on the throttle, and it just revved. I'm still able to drive, only first gear doesn't engage. I can double clutch it and get it going but I have to be very careful on hills....

I noticed the shifter rattled/vibrated while in first before first went out. The shifter seems to be fine in other gears. I'm looking at a "new to me" transmission. Is it easier to replace the transmission or is this a more simple/cheaper fix?

This is in a six cylinder 2000.

Thanks guys.

if its just 1st gear its likely an issue with that gear itself, synchros, shift fork, etc. probably best to just rebuild/replace

First thread I thought of, but took a bit to find. Silver Dude hasn't been around for a few years unfortunately
