Okay guys and gals,
Im looking for a new rear bumper. I want a tire carrier on it so that i have that bit extra clearance underneath. Id like to spend no more that 500, but i may be able to go a little more. Please give me some ideas!

Thanks

Your price range unfortunately puts you in the used area of this spectrum. We do not really have the market open for competition, and thus have higher priced accessories. For that ballpark, I would look at RLC or a custom shop around you and see what you can have one built for. Most are going to be in the market of 600-800+

Roadwarrior, have you seen personally or heard about the one offered on EBay? Its made by Hardcore Offroad and seems pretty decent. It costs $585 with the carrier on it and hitch.

Yea its a pain having limited money for basically anything. Ill look into local fab shops. Hey, even my school could possibly build me one

Local fabrication is the way to go in my opinion. Best value is if you can find some guy who knows a guy that does fabrication in his garage. You could also have someone fabricate a swing down tire carrier instead of swing away. Having the tire swing down to the ground, I believe, is a bit simpler...and you can decide how simple or complicated to make it...

I built mine for about $50.00 total. I did all of it myself, and the main piece of the bumper was free, as was the majority of the rest was scrap that I already had in the garage. But spend the time to do a swing away instead of a swing down. Lifting the tire every time that you want in the back gets old very quickly.

My buddy was looking to make something like this for my 2nd gen, anyone have any experiecen with using them? I was worried it would weigh down on the hitch too much.

Your hitch is designed for weight that far exceeds that of a spare tire. It's mounted to the frame, not the bumper...

....but if you use your hatch any at all, you'll want a swing away instead of a swing down.

Theoretically, couldn't you put a couple of liftgate struts on a swing down carrier in order to make it easier to live with?

You could, but that puts you standing 2-3' back from the bumper. Imagine trying to reach for something, or load something in the back and having to stand over your spare tire.

Yeah, I see what you mean... I think as a cheap, viable option for trail riding though, it has merit. Especially since a hitch mounted version would be removeable. Just my $0.02, didn't mean to threadjack.

If it's temporary, heck yeah, I want one! Haha. I definitely wouldn't do something permanent like that, though.

All very good points...It comes down to price vs. convenience. I'm a pretty strong guy and don't go to the hatch a whole lot. Point of this....is that $500 can get you a bumper and rear tire carrier...but it depends on how you design and build it.

If you have a hitch, you can also just mount it directly to the hitch, assuming you don't need it for towing frequently...secures with only a hitch pin:

I built this rear tube bumper:

and have thought about buying this to bolt to the back of the tubes:

I built my rear bumper for about $150 in material and the tire carrier above costs $33 from Amazon with 4-5 star reviews.

It can be done for under $500 depending on what you want

I'd do something like that strictly on wheeling days...put it on that morning, take it back off after.

The design my buddy was making up had the tire swinging down. So it wouldn't swing towards you, it would swing to the left. Then you would just un-screw the tire and roll it to where ever you need it. That would make it so you can still open the hatch and get to things. He wanted to weld it to a hitch extender piece, so you can still tow things or attach your d-ring reciever.

From what I understand, he was going to have something mocked up for me in the next week or so. Once I can get some pictures I can post them up.

Found this on a Jeep forum, focus more on the concept and less on the crap welds and departure angle destroying hitch extension.

Sweet looking welds!

I have seen swing aways like that before, but just can't get over the fact that you have to have a double run of tube to the side like that. I just feel like it is so much of a cantilever and looks funny.

Brain storm away though...I have been brain storming for a couple weeks now. Can't quite figure out what exactly I want to do with it yet, though.

Okay so i found a buddy of mine at school that can make me both a rear tube bumper with swing tire carrier AND a front tube bumper just like Addicted Offroad's for about $350 all together. He does great work and thats really cheap!

Hey now, you guys gotta remember, $350 is his "friend" price, and this is how much he can make them for. IF this kid does decide to mass produce, or at least produce a few more, it would be smart of him (and in his best interest) to increase the cost. Just sayin. And then you gotta add shipping, customizing options, etc.

But it's awesome you found someone you know that is local to do it for you. Post up some pics as they are getting built if you can.

Ill definitely post pics as soon as they're done. The kid does this stuff for fun and i know his welds are great. But he definitely isnt into mass sales (although thatd be sweet if he was!) He has to give some credit to our high school teachers, they are the ones that teach us welding!

Cap is 100% right about this. Don't assume that 350 to stand. I would always think the first of something would be done at a deal. Simply based on the fact that I had never done it before so it's just a guess. But once you build one and you realize the time and expense involved, the price will increase.
