What tire chains for Pro-4X?

Here in CO we can be required to install tire chains or alternate traction devices during winter driving conditions. I usually carry chains, although so far have never had to install them, thank goodness. I've got the 265/75 16 tires. The owner's manual says to get Class S.

Just wondering if there any that any of you might particularly recommend?

News to me. Been in CO for 5 years. The chain requirement, to my understanding, is only for commercial motor vehicles. Am I missing something?

  • Passenger Vehicle Chain Law: All passenger vehicles weighing less than 16,001 pounds gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) must have tire chains or alternate traction devices (ATD) installed on two or more drive tires. It is unlawful to proceed when a state highway is closed or to proceed when a restriction is in effect without the required chain/ATD equipment installed. Violators will be given a citation, which comes with a $100 fine and $32 surcharge. That jumps to a $500 fine with a $156 surcharge if a violation results in the closure of one or more traffic lanes.

You're missing a key point in that write up.

Quote:

When are Restrictions Placed on Passenger Vehicles?

A chain law restriction for vehicles weighing less than 16,001 pounds—including passenger vehicles, crossovers, SUVs and small trucks—can be put into effect in Colorado at any time when weather conditions are severe, primarily on roadways with significant ascending and descending grades.

Notice the words "CAN BE" not "Will be" .... like Prime, I've not seen anytime when a chain restriction was placed on passenger vehicles. The way the state words it is "Chains or adequate snow tires"... and if you need chains, then you shouldn't be out there anyway (my opinion). The chain law is mainly for commercial vehicles.

@Prime..... with the summer hail storms how many times did you see the plows out on the highways with chains on?? Not once that I can recall. And that weather situation falls under the "any time when weather conditions are severe" phrase. ;)

Like I said in the OP, I've only ever needed them once. Like you, I will generally try to avoid driving if I think it's gong to be that bad. Other side of the story: The once I needed them I was out on the road and miles from anywhere. It wasn't a law, it was physics. Another, time driving in CA I avoided a ticket because I had them in the vehicle, not installed. We do get around, and winter driving can be unpredictable.
