RLC Bumper Questions

So it appears everyone has been more than thrilled with James and the bumpers he has been producing for us, but I just had a few questions in regards to them.

1) how difficult is it to mount a front bumper on an 02 Supercharged? By this I mean, is it difficult to get the original bumper off, and get the new RLC bumper on level?

2) Does the bumper come with mounting hardware? If it doesn't what exactly do I need to buy?

3) Mine is coming with fog light holes. I did not specify a certain location, so I imagine they will be where everyone elses are. will the original fog lights fit in there, or can I wire a pair of LED lights to fit and us the original harness (and use my existing fog light switch on the blinker arm?)

4) I noticed some people have there clevis mounts located in different places. Some beside the winch throat, some off to the side facing down. Is one better than the other?

5) I would like to finally put a winch on my unit (Been holding off for the bumper first), is there a size restriction that will fit in the bumper?

Many thanks in advance guys (and gals).

I'm not sure on the hardware..

The way it has the winch allows for many options.. Large area for one.. Shouldn't have any restrictions.

James likes to mount the shackle on the sides of sorts.. I'm not sure if he still does this but I wasn't a fan of the look or the idea of binding on the mount from a straight on pull..
So I wanted mine out front..

Typically, you want the recovery pull centered if possible.

Side shackles, etc, are there more for using a pulley, etc, so you can increase the pulling power at the expense of line speed, etc....and when the only pull direction is off set too much, etc.

The strength is at the frame horns typically, so a shackle right in front of, or even better, anchored to, a frame horn, is your strongest point.

I would like to know about the hardware as well...mine seems to have disappeared since I took my bumper off back in Nov. I think James assumes you will use the same hardware that is holding the original bumper on (which I believe is 3 bolts on each side...).

Thanks guys, sounds like the original hardware is the way to go, just wansnt sure if I needed longer bolts or what not. Winch options sounds like it's not an issue which is also great.

Has anyone used their original fog lights in the holes? If not can I wire leds in and use the original light switch?

Also talked to James and getting the clevis mounts put on the front by the winch

Yeah... Look at the RLC forum and you will see many ideas for the bumper..

Prime had James make mounts to hold the factory lights I believe

As far as light mounting, if you want to something other than a regular single bolt tab, it's best to send James the lights so that they can me mounted correctly.

It's as simple as unbolting the stock bumper and bolting in the 8 bolts that hold the RLC on. The only thing you have to do is take the very end of the frame off. The piece that goes perpendicular to the actual frame. Just two bolts. PB Blast is your friend.

2) Does the bumper come with mounting hardware? If it doesn't what exactly do I need to buy?

The bumper does not coming with mounting hardware. You can use the same bolts that hold on the stock bumper. Three on each side and one up front on each side.

3) Mine is coming with fog light holes. I did not specify a certain location, so I imagine they will be where everyone elses are. will the original fog lights fit in there, or can I wire a pair of LED lights to fit and us the original harness (and use my existing fog light switch on the blinker arm?)

I can't attest to the original fog lights fitting in there because I had a different year model. I put in 2 Tuff LED fogs from Amazon in there and I love them! Just about 50 bucks. And you can use the stock wiring, if you want. I preferred not to. However, I put a set of lights right below my bumper and wired them straight into the existing wiring. Works great.

4) I noticed some people have there clevis mounts located in different places. Some beside the winch throat, some off to the side facing down. Is one better than the other?

Like TJ said, I believe forward facing would be better for pulling and I just preferred the look anyway.

5) I would like to finally put a winch on my unit (Been holding off for the bumper first), is there a size restriction that will fit in the bumper?

Almost all 8-10k pound winches will fit fine and even some 12. The best thing to do is just measure the hole once you get the bumper and when you go winch shopping look at the dimensions.

Hope all this helps!

I put in 2 Tuff LED fogs from Amazon in there and I love them! Just about 50 bucks. Could you pass a link along, and will these fit in the 4.5 hole he puts in the bumper?

Cheers, guys

And here's some pictures of that light in the bumper

How it sits now. The LEDs tinted and a grill over the holes.

Very happy! I was very surprised on bright they were and I've put it through mud, water, and everything you could imagine and I haven't had an ounce of problem with them. Really surprised for the money I gave.

Awesome, and did you manage to hook them up so you can turn them on with the original fog light switch?

I could have but I didn't. I preferred to have them come on with a switch. If you look up at the middle picture I posted with all the lights on.. The little tiny ones at the very bottom are hooked up to the stock fog light wiring.

Yo Casey, when you get a minute, snap a picture of your mounting hardware and the locations. Just need to confirm something.

Will do. Give me a minute!

So bumper finally came in the mail and it looks AWESOME. Better than I was hoping for to be honest. Like many of you, James shipped the top tube un-attached for shipping purposes, and I now need to have it welded on. But my question is this, "do I have it welded on before or after I mount it?"

I was planning on having it welded on, then primer, paint and install. But would it make more sense to have it welded on once the bumper is mounted? What did the rest of yu do?

I'd say definitely have it welded, painted, then installed. The bars will do nothing but help you install. Give you something to grab onto. And painting JUST the bars while installed will be difficult.

Thanks Casey, hopefully get it welded up on Monday. Then gotta wait for my lights, and winch, and I am off to the races.

Looking on the RLC page at the center hoops, it looks like I will have to get it welded really close to the front of the bumper as the bumper sits almost flush. Does this sound right? There are not really any photos of the center hoop location close up, would someone be able to pop one and post it for me please?

Thanks man. The other thing I noticed is the base of the hoop is cut on a slight angle. Some seem to angle it back towards the truck, and others away, like yourself drbandkgb.

I also have to figure out what to paint it with. I bought protect dip (same as plasti dip) but not sure how it would hold up?

I like the idea of bed liner, but apparently it's a ***** if you mess up or want it off. Any thoughts on that?
