On the VERY limited research I did a fair price on that truck would be somewhere between 5800 and 6. Again worst case scenario is you make an offer and they say no.

http://tricities.craigslist.org/ctd/5072226398.html This is ANOTHER good deal very local to me....again an AUTOMATIC!! I agree that truck is way overpriced and I already spoke to the guy about it. I did not get the impression that he was gonna bend too much on the price. Besides 5800-6 is a lot more than I want to spend on one. When you can find MANY reasonable miles examples in the 3500-4000 range it is really hard to swallow anything more than that unless it is really a cream puff.

Lol I feel for ya man. You could always just partner up with prime and give project pipedream a go ;) seriously though just be patient and no impulse buys. I rushed looking for my truck and could've gotten something better so learn from my mistakes.

https://asheville.craigslist.org/ctd/5044789343.html Honestly this is the best deal I have seen so far.. It's probably about two hours away and it is at a dealer. But good price on a low miles clean truck... Honestly if I can find it I am hoping for a decent one in the 100-150k range for around $4k asking price if it is clean I will buy it without haggling.. I think this is doable from what I have seen after searching for almost two weeks almost constantly now LOL...

The thing with SASing a 2wd is that our rear axles aren't as strong so that has to go and is forth and you quickly end up with way too much money into it.

To serve as encouragement for your price/miles goal - My first X was a white 2002 4x4 with 140k miles for $4,100...but unfortunately, I had someone run a red and hit me..So it only lived for a week. Keep up the search and don't get discouraged. What you're looking for will pop up, you've just got to catch it quickly.

This applies to Gen 2s only.

Irrelevant to this thread, but Gen 2s come with a C200 unless the Off-Road trim is found. The OR has the M226, which is near identical to the Titan's M226.

Thanks guys... honestly I have absolutely zero interest in the Gen 2 models. They just look much heavier to me than the gen 1's despite the fact that they are going to come in at a considerably higher price point makes me have essentially zero interest in them. Honestly I like the round eye gen 1.5 models and hope to find one like that. I guess time will tell. Yesterday someone posted a nice clean very low mile 2004 4x4 on local craigslist and the ad said it was a manual tranny. I contacted him and unfortunately it was a mistake. So....the search continues!!

XTP_Dyer,
Thanks for the comments and feedback. Having been researching and looking quite a bit lately I agree that it is totally doable to find what I am looking for in the price range I am looking for. The real issue is just the lower numbers of the model I am looking for. There were apparently a helluva lot more automatic 4x4's made than 5 speed 4x4's. It is just that simple. I have already found several of them in my price range with miles I would be happy with unfortunately they were all too far away to act upon.

Well I went to that dealer yesterday to look at that black 5 speed 4x4. It is actually really nice and clean inside. It does have a rusty rear bumper and both rear shocks were really eaten up with rust but the frame looked good as did the rear of the truck just very light traces of surface rust. I drove it and it was very nice and powerful with the 5 speed. This was the first time I have actually driven an Xterra and I can see why you guys like them so much. It is a very comfortable truck and reasonably roomy inside despite it's narrow profile that allows it to get thru the woods and trails easier. This truck did have a couple pretty noticeable dents and scars on it on the tailgate and the right rear sheetmetal above the plastic cladding/bumper. I spoke to the sales guy and after talking about it for awhile it was pretty clear to me they did not want to move on the price too much so I did not even bother offering the low ball price I was thinking about. I told him about the one I missed out on for $4k and he kinda rolled his eyes LOL. I am gonna wait a little while longer and see if they still have it and then maybe go back and make the offer. Did not see anything pop up on craigslist that looked tempting yesterday so the search continues. Glad I got to drive one finally so I know what to look for and what it feels like to drive it. Seems like it will be a good truck for what I want to do with it.

What was the asking price/miles? They're almost always on commission, so you may just need to bring in a different approach. Come in ready to buy and make your offer. Statements such as "I'm here with cash and ready to buy this right now" put money signs in front of a commission based salesman (I've been there). You can talk them down, but you need to have reasons to justify the price drop in order to prevent the eye-roll.

Well the asking price is $5850 I posted the ad yesterday for it. Believe me I had sufficient cash in hand I just did not get the feeling that they were very flexible on the price. I never gave any impression that I could not afford it or anything like that. Honestly I would really like this truck but after looking it over and seeing the rust and damage on it I think that their price is even more unrealistic. Would really like to come in at under $4k for the total price of the truck and I don't see that happening. Perhaps if it sits there for a lot longer without moving perhaps maybe they will be more apt to move on it. It has already sat there for several weeks so who knows. What bothers me the most is that there are plenty of auto trucks in good shape with decent miles for sale locally for sub $4k asking prices. Makes paying more for that one with known rust and body damage issues even harder to swallow. I will see what happens here but honestly I am getting pretty tired of not having a vehicle here so I am probably not gonna wait too much longer. If I can't find what I want I will either just grab the best of the local auto trucks or maybe buy a cheap Jeep Wrangler or something....

Just offer a number and be super critical of everything. Explain why you don't like it. What's he gonna say, no?

That's my point exactly^ offer a number and give a detailed list of reasons why you're offering what you are. They can bring that price down easily. It's all in how you negotiate things.

Yeah I know guys I have bought lots of cars in my time. I just honestly think that our numbers are too far apart for this one. I may try again here at the end of the week if they still have the truck. I really would like to get that one it is pretty nice and definitely buildable for what I want to do with it.

Meh unfortunately....

I am still without an xterra and I am still sitting here with cash waiting for the right one. Several different 5 speeds have been posted locally two were apparently scams or mistakes somehow and one has 290k on it. Getting frustrated and tired of searching for one here.

Well a little update here. Called about an Xterra that was posted on my local Craigslist today. The ad was unclear whether or not it was a 2wd or 4wd. I got a text back saying that it was a 2wd unfortunately. I said I was not interested in a 2wd. He texted me back that he had another truck for sale that was 4x4. It is an auto tranny but it has decent miles on it and the price he gave me is VERY good so I am going to go look at it if he gets back to me tomorrow. If it is nice at all I will probably buy it. Hoping it is as nice as he describes it to be. Will let you guys know when I see it.

https://knoxville.craigslist.org/cto/5096824034.html Jeez man.... I just went to look at this one in Powell. Drove it around a bit. Price is great and it actually drove okay. I passed on it because the truck was just really worn in a lot of places inside and out that are amazingly NOT apparent in the pictures. For that price I surely did not expect a perfect truck but it was pretty rough. I think the biggest reason I passed was because after driving the automatic and having driven the 5 speed I did not think I would be happy with the auto anymore. Probably gonna regret passing on it as it would have saved me a lot of money probably on what I will eventually get but it just did not feel right. Oh and the guy selling it had a signed title from another person from Pennsylvania and he could not get in touch with them. It was also signed by the previous owners wife and himself. Who knows if the title is good or not.... SIGH

I am glad you guys found that one. It certainly looks good and the fact that it already has a winch bumper is a big plus. Unfortunately it is at a dealer and if my experience with dealers holds true anything that looks remotely cool or four by four they think is worth a small fortune and price them accordingly. Ya never know and hopefully it has decent miles on it and the price is reasonable.... I will call them in the morning and see what gives.

In the mean time the search continues....

Bring a friend and paperwork on the actual cost of both the vehicle and the aftermarket parts.
They don't add up like they think it should.

Well guys...

You are not going to believe this. Unfortunately today after I went to look at the xterra in Knoxville on the way back my wife's suv had a major mechanical problem. We managed to limp it home but it is down for the count. Since it was our only vehicle as I sold my truck to buy the xterra we had little choice but to buy her another vehicle. She picked out one from the local craigslist and we went to look at it. She liked it So we bought it. So the good news is that we have a nice clean reliable vehicle again the bad news is that I will have to pay to fix her suv and hopefully sell it afterwards so I can again try to buy an xterra. This is an unfortunate situation but it was a surprise. I have some jobs I am working on right now that may allow me to just buy a decent xterra outright hopefully. Right now I am going to try to recoup my losses here and hope for the best. I will keep following the threads here and live vicariously thru you guys. Sorry I wasted your time and thanks for the help and kindness.

Very sorry to hear about your wife's vehicle, that's unfortunate. Keep your head up, keep working, and keep your eyes peeled. On the bright side...Happy wife, happy life.

Thanks man. The truck has been dead reliable for a long time I guess it was just it's time LOL. I am glad we got her a newer vehicle and that it seems to be very nice and runs well. She does not have to worry about getting back and forth to work now. I am going to try to get some parts and fix her old SUV and maybe try to sell it to recoup some of my money. Hopefully then I can buy an Xterra or a Suzuki samurai to four wheel or something LOL... Such is life!
