So I'm reading this thread about coilover shocks......somewhere else....

And one person in the thread keeps using the word strut.

And I REALLY want to call them out on it since he obviously has no clue what the difference between a shock and a strut is.... But they don't know who I am there and that kind of harassment isn't relevant to all of the interesting information being posted.

They are both dampers and indeed perform the same exact function. However.

A strut is when the damper forms a travel arm of the suspension. For example, a Macpherson setup that is found on the Mustang. The damper IS the upper control arm. Thus making it a strut.

On the a full size Bronco, there is a coil spring and a damper. The suspension exists perfectly fine and functional without a damper. Albeit with a shiat ride. That damper is a shock.

The 2nd gen X requires a shock because it's a coilover design. However. If you were to eliminate the damper and just shove a spring in there, the truck would still be drivable because there are still upper and lower control arms. So the X has a shock also.

I had a terrible nightmare last night; somehow every suspension component on my Xterra was completely destroyed. Like, sheared apart into twisted and warped metal. It's because I watched this dumb video on Facebook of a RAZR jumping straight up and coming down on the front left tire, wrecking his suspension in the process
