Welded the tire supports, face plate and the lug bolts all together today after work. UPS delivered the lock from McMaster-Carr and it'll be welded on in the morning along with swing arm mounts. Afterwhich everything gets welded together. Antenna mounts will be the last things added before a final wash down, dry, fine sanding, rust proofing and painting.
I'll take and post pics from today and tomorrow...tomorrow after I take 'em.

Lovin the sliders, so wish I had a welder to make my own!

Thanks... They're not that hard to make actually, just time consuming. I made a few mistakes along the way but that's because I started rushing the work. The welder was the best gift my wife could have given me. She calls it my "new toy"...lol. Everyone so far has been right when they said "you're always learning more the more you use it". Getting better each time. I highly suggest getting one even if it's just to learn something new and diferent.

I'm no expert...yet, but I do have the confidence now to know I can do it. Who knows maybe once I finish with Steena, I might offer my services to local members wanting something done, just to keep the skill going forward.

Agreed my welder has always been my dads biggest cost saver. Its fixed everything from broken garage door openers to cracked lawn mower frames. A glue gun for metal what a concept. Still my favorite tool. I get excited every time I plug it in. I used to be terrible at welding. But, welding the rusty frame and body on my old truck for many years has taught me alot. I now weld much better then my dad does with his machine. But, only because I've used it so much and know what it requires for the task.

Always a good skill to have, I cant remember all of the things around the house that ave been fixed with a quick weld and some paint. The big step is when you go from welding on your own junk, to welding on someone elses.

I learned a few things while doing this project. My intention was to learn so, I found mistakes and have a better understanding about weight distribution and material processing. I've already started my tube bumper designs for both front and rear. Good thing about this bumper is that the major parts can and will be salvaged and reused for a trailer project.

I am really enjoying your build so far. You are taking your time and doing it right. I keep telling my wife I need a welder, and she keeps telling me I need a garage. If I had a garage, she would never see me. Keep up the great work...... Can't wait to meet you and Steena at NXM.....

Well thank you sir...I'm just playing catchup with these other guys. My wife said I could as long as I didn't spend outragous amounts of $. So I told her most of the things I would make myself. THAT WAS A MISTAKE cause she's holding me to it. LOL.

Trust me...I didn't intent it to be ALL DIY's, it's just turning out to be that way so far. I've been reading everyone's builds there's a lot of information out here. Reading the DIY's on things I'm interested in. Asking a SH!T load of questions to the point I think I got on a few folks nerves...sorry.

Then I came to the realization that some of the things I wanted like slider, bumpers and skids, I simple didn't have the money for. So I talk to the bank (the wife) about what I wanted to do. She surprised me with a welder and said have fun. I'm just doing the things other folks have done already. So you all just keep doing what you're doing and writing up the DIY's...trust me, I'm reading 'em.

Long story short, If I can get to the point where I understand HOW and WHY something is done, and can actually visualize a final product in my head, I can make it. I think anyone can. The 2 questions I ask myself before I start anything always help me to decide: Do I mind getting my hands dirty? as in hands, face, clothes, floor, walls ... anything, and Do I have the patience? as in will I do the proper research, take my time and not rush through it and most of all, LEARN SOMETHING. If I honestly answer yes to both those questions, I'll do it.

Dang, this wasn't supposed to turn into a novel...imma stop typing now.

Asking questions and learning is what this forum is all about...I know I've learned a bunch, and a lot faster than the old days trying to decipher the Haynes manuals and slavishly wrench by numbers...it's a process, and it's pretty cool when you get to the point where you can start "seeing" how things need to be done rather than just trying to follow directions. No such thing as too many questions- its how you get answers!

After having too many things to do, finally will have a chance to install the AC UCA's tomorrow. If all goes well will pop in the new bump stops and IAB as well.

Woohooo ... :bmmd:

Passenger Side ball joint was completely bad. No rubber to protect anything. The top lifted completely off the mushroom head without any pressure or twisting. There was a 1/32 thick piece of rubber inside for cushioning. Rust everywhere. Now I gotta figure out how to get the BJ stud out. A pickle fork isn't thick enough to oush the stud up. Drivers side isn't much better. Cotter pin has snapped in pieces from rust and there's not enough to grab to pull on. Gonna have to cut the nut off just to get to the stud. Saving grace is that the ball joint is intact and should be able to use a pickle fork to pop it out. Lawd I'm sure glad I love my Steena.

Lol Oh rly...

Should be able to remove your stud out. Find a pry bar apply upward removal pressure on it and smack the area where it goes into the knuckle with the biggest hammer you own should pop right out no problem. Pickle forks are for pickles, hammer and prybar pressure is way easier. Plenty of videos on youtube if you need to see the trick in action. The only difficulty is not having enough hands to strain a prybar and swing a hammer at the same time.

You can always cut the nut off flush with the bottom of the hub housing and use a ball joint press to drive it out, or a punch and a BFH.

But using the ball joint press is the easiest.

AC UCA's, Cam bolts, Ball Joints and Bump stops installed...

Ended up using a pickle fork and a pair of old vice grips. Locked the grips under the lip of the stud head then BFHerd the fork under the grips. It finally gave in.

Alternator died today. Got to the metra after work and Steena wouldn't start. Got a jump drove home let it run for a bit turned her off tried to restart...nothin. When the wife got home, jumped her again(the X, not the wife), let her run, checked the battery 13V. Checked all the fuses...found the fog light fuse had burned out...don't have fogs anyway. Removed all the AC and ABS fuses since I don't have those either. Turned her off. Tried to restart...nothin. Not even a clicking for the starter. Checked the battery again and it was flipping between 12/13. Indicator lights wouldn't even turn on.

Quest ALT...here I come!!! $179 + $57 core. Ordered and pickup is in the morning.

Also what torsion bars are you going with? Calmini? AC? SAW?

Sent from somewhere by something

Well I bought mine from AC. I got slapped on the wrist because I stated "I bought the AC TB's not the SAW TB's". The statement was IIRC... AC TB's are SAW(Sway-A-Way). So from that point I just say I bought mine from AC.

So... Steena now has a new P/S Tie Rod Adjuster Arm thanks to Dave and Tim. This wasn't planned and came at a moment that simply shoudn't have happened. User error. Learned a few things about the X and myself. Next year...we both will be ready. Thanks to EVERYONE that lended a hand or simply answered questions.

Got to ride on a night run with Saks...I'll just say everyone needs to ride w/ him at one time or another... kool beans.

John... what can I say... "BIG STONES MAN!!!" HAHAHAHA and the misus is too cool. remember 1 on the cheek everytime.

Met some good people and a good mix too. Hope I can do and contribute more next time.
