I can't remember if I have asked for this before so don't hate me if I am repeating myself but on my old forum we had a live chat box and that was fun.. that is all

I'm just gonna leave this here.....

The live chat is a option...

IT was brought up early on but... I know the other site has it and no one uses it..
and any useful info is not stored..

But we can table this again

It hasn't worked on that other site since before I had joined, which was last summer. I think the new owners killed it when they took over....

I second the chatbox idea.

When we discussed the chat box idea earlier on we brought up the issue of moderating such a thing and how difficult it would be.

I know the one that I've seen on another forum had a word filter with a clearing function and a limited history. If it was still around I would reference it. Not really any different that going through posts and finding a bad one. When you hop on the site ya just check that and see if there is something wrong.

I feel like with our "younger" crowd here (if you get my reference) we may use it more

I'd be inclined to agree....

**IF** you're willing to run it through an IRC server, live chat is easy.
we used to use it over at "the other site" but, everyone expected to be able to pop in, ask questions, then bailed as soon as they didn't get a response in 15-30 seconds. I would think the laid back crew here would understand how a chat would work better than "the other site" did.

as far as useful info not being stored...I have solutions for that, and am more than willing to help out. You run an eggdrop bot in the IRC channel and it logs the chat, as it logs the chat, you could pull that info into a forum thread, it just wouldn't tie to specific users, nor would it likely be easy to tie each line of text from each chatter to every user individually.

if you're down for giving it a try, I'll do my best to help set it up for the site, and community as a whole.

I second the chatbox idea.

again, see the above remark about the mentality of the other site and its chat. Fangars/Xoskel and I did our best to keep the chat alive, and for quite a while, we were the admins/mods for the chat site.

When we discussed the chat box idea earlier on we brought up the issue of moderating such a thing and how difficult it would be.

moderating it is **CAKE** if you roll through an IRC based system, I could teach ya'll how to do that within 15-30 minutes at most.

if you run a java or flash based "chatbox", the arguements above about difficulty of implementation, moderation, and everything else then become 100% valid.

the advantage to run with the IRC based system, is the fact that mobile users can log a client into the chat and directly access that, just like we can via forumrunner/tapatalk...

I like having a chat option, it'd be much like the post whore thread, except realtime with no delay from post to post in responding to things...

As far as moderating goes just *bleep* out the usuals and change some words such as TheNewX.org to words like Sinking Ship you know the usual

I more worry about disagreements that escalate rather than cursing because like it had been mentioned a cuss filter can be added.

My former mazda site was not nearly as family friendly curse word wise but we were a family and acted as such. Any dispute should be handled in PMs basically I think that should be a rule and if they don't follow it ban them...... FROM THE CHAT BOX

No, chat wouldn't work from tapatalk.

Mac, that's why you have chat-ops/admins/mods, and in general, we all act like adults

Oh yeah, I don't doubt that people would use it correctly most often. I'm just stating concerns.

Personally, I'd rather see the money used for a chat system put to something else like site give aways or a front page. I don't know what the costs are on any of this so I'm spitting in the dark.

Mobile connectivity and work connectivity...irc wins on both. Hell, last I knew I could package a flash drive irc client that'd connect fine through a locked down DoD firewall...

As for word filters, I'm not a fan. With either you'd be harder pressed to run much "censoring" , so, on that egg drop, you make auto-mod...after a word on this list is used X times within a set timeframe, it auto-kicks, after it's kicked, if you violate again within X amount of time it auto-bans for 24 hours...

The vet side of me says anything other than the more "harsh" profanity is excessive, and becomes censorship, but the admin side of me says "hey, you wanna see what happens if the word "the" is on the list, lets try it out."

You tell me that you want and I'll have it for ya quick like, and show you how to use it. If you don't want me to have admin privs on the irc side after initial setup, that's fine too...I'm not picky or trying to power grab, just trying to lend help in the area I know well.

Admins...

While I was adding a thread in the Gen1 area about "Aftermarket Front Seat Replacement", I received a message that it was a duplicate. It flashed quickly and I wasn't able to read it all. However the thread was added. I did check but didn't see another thread labeled like that before I made the attempt. If there is one, would you point me to it and delete the one I added.

Thanks,
Greg

ADDED: This just happened again w/ a new thread. I wonder if my mouse is double clicking and I don't know it...hmmmm damn fast mouse or it's hosed.

Just click ok Nothing to worry about. I'll have to update our Tapatalk is all. The newest version works, which I'm using, it's just a couple of features that need updating that aren't critical.

Is there a "view 1st unread" button? I sure as can't find it.

And on the standard android browser, every time I try logging in, the browser crashes. It works fine with firefox.

Next to the envelope icon there is a little blue round circle on the thread list. That's the 1st unread button.

Also, if you're on an android, you should be using Tapatalk. Makes the world MUCH easier.

Just popped in to say I'm actually using a computer to look at the site. I normally use Tapatalk and I had read a lot about the main page and its color changes, I have to say I like what we have right now, well at least everything I've seen so far
